^ uhh. hi. sorry for butting in your conversation. i read that you're talking about arts and such. i myself am planning on taking fine arts, or graphic arts but i'm not so sure w/c is suited best for a career in video games as a concept artist. i believe fine arts is more, traditional? i like drawing and i think i'm pretty decent at it. i'll be going to college next year and this is my current dillema XD.

Graphic Arts as in Graphic Design? I don't really know if there is a difference. Is there a difference? Do you know what Graphic Arts is?

Is it concept design you want in on?
That's the current plan - that or storyboarding for games - maybe both? i guess it depends on what game company i get into and what they want me for.
Could you make something like this?
If I had better software probably

Fine arts is more general any type of art, I only took one computer graphics class... my professor was an artist so it was probably a bit more art-heavy than the typical class (don't quote me on this, i only took one class) but... both would probably be fine... I'm not the best person to ask though, i'm working it all out myself.

@LightningPoodle oops i meant graphic design. sorry. this is where you do the digital painting stuffs right?
@ AddieTheElf thanks, i checked the course description at the university that i'm applying, and turns out graphic design focuses more on vector/ photo editing than actually drawing. i believe there's also digital painting but that's just about it.

I am doing Graphic Design at University. The only way you will be able to find ways of including drawing into your work is if you have a general talent for it. Most of my projects have had to be photographic or typographic, not so much illustrative. I have just finished a Zine - a small story like magazine - which included a lot of drawing but that was only do-able because of the nature of what my story was about.
Edit: No, that's not quite accurate. In college, one of my friends actually relied heavily on what is essentially doodles. Most of his work was photographic, but with a lot of illustrative work added in which still kept his unique style. When I looked at a piece of work, I could instantly tell it was his because of his doodles. And they were really good, he got really good grades for his projects.

neat. so it's like a form of mixed media? i have no trouble in doing illustrations/doodles although i still need to work on some of my anatomy and proportion. but i;m almost there, i think. planning on taking a career that involves a lot of that.

In college, my first year was a lot of "Use mix media, make me want to touch it, feel it, remember it". Second year, learnt that crap was not needed and basically wasted my first year. Second year was a lot better. The stuff I posted was from second year. The drawing was supposed to look like that, it might look shoddy, but that's how I wanted to represent it. My idea was to create an "indoor street art design company".
University, I've already learnt that unless mixed media is crucial to a project, don't use it. Use what is only necessary, otherwise it looks to artistic and not enough graphics.

That sucks. Should i expect something like that i college? XD i have a feeling that i should expect something like that in college.
i talked to a friend who's taking graphics design, and yeah she can confirm that. They focus more on practical designs, something that's easy to perceive and direct. at least that's what she says.

EDIT: since this is a sera thread, i guess i have to say something about our favorite elf. I love Sera she's so funny and crazy and she reminds me of my friend from elementary who likes telling dick jokes and showing off her butt to people.

My Uni tutor explained it like this.
On one hand, you have art where everything is pretty and all over the place. On the other hand, you have science. Science like psychology and others where you understand how people view the world. Graphic design is those two brought together to create something that looks good, but is also functional - get's the message across in unique ways.
Basically, anytime your college tutor says "make it pretty", call them up on the bullish*t.
