I made a nice long post defending Sera in that one thread, completely on topic and calm, and a mod erased it.  <_<

I don't care if people don't agree with her, that's understandable. What I can't stand is claiming someone is 'mentally retarded' because you don't agree with them. That thread just needs to go away.

Needs to burn in hell that one does. I don't understand how someone can say that in the opening post and mods overlook it. Just goes to show, they don't know sh*t about what they are doing. That or they are being a biased pr*ck and also hate Sera... which I'm pretty sure goes against the job description.

And for that, here's some cookies.

Still, can't say I'm surprised that a thread like that came up just like I can't say I'm surprised no-one even dared to try pick Cat's post apart.

Though I have noticed that the female characters I like tend to polarise.

Correlation maybe?

Yep. I wasted my time. I'm off to read funny stories about horrible in-laws.

Well give them credit for one thing: they know not to pick an argument with you.

You didn't waste your time, Cat. <3 you gave onlookers and lurkers something to consider, and you proved that people who are gonna make snap judgements and offensive, reductionist arguments will never be able to meaningfully respond to those who are thoughtful and analytical...because to do so would reveal the baseness of their argument.

Comedic Sociopathy and Errant Knight also made very good points and were likewise ignored.

The usual reasoning behind their statements is that they can't understand her and that she calls everyone "stupid". They think it is an insult.. They clearly have no friends IRL and don't know that people call each other names not actually meaning it.

Also true.

I think the last time I weighed in on a Sera hate thread was to defend her skills as an archer.
Dude still kept pressing the same point after being presented with video evidence.

Thus I now respond with snark and memes. Easier that way, funnier too.

Let's not go into assumptions about people's personal lives. The 'language barrier' with Sera is often mentioned though. She has a very personalized way of expressing herself and it can be a bit confusing at first. She resorts to 'shut it', 'stupid' and 'p*ss it' when she is backed into a corner and can't argue anymore. She spends her time in alleys with lower class ruffians and servants. That's not likely to be the most eloquent bunch, especially in a medieval setting.

Sera is used to dealing with her 'friends' and telling people to shut up or calling them stupid is not a big deal for her. The problem is that she can dish it but she can't take it. Call her out on some stuff (call her stupid or immature) and she disapproves in various degrees. In her mind, when she says it, it doesn't mean anything. When other people say it, they mean it and they are thus judging/rejecting her. She's being over sensitive towards herself and under sensitive towards others. She's out of balance, basically.

She needs to learn to consider other people's feelings before she talks and also not to take everything personally. If you drink from the Well of Sorrows she points an arrow at you and complains if you are angry about it. Heh. Perspective is an interesting thing.

No one likes to be called stupid. if my friends screamed at me and called me stupid, I'd be upset. If it was a friend who I knew had emotional regulation/self centered ness issues and had just been pushed to their discomfort point though, and still found their friendship valuable enough to tolerate that for (which I do have friends like that...nobody's perfect, if you can accept the flaws in people, you still have the good), then I might need to calm down before I realized why they are acting that way, but I could understand it.

I would be friends with Sera. She's infuriating sometimes, and so very young, but she's loyal and charming and all her frustrating aspects come from being all muddled up and turned around, and I can relate to that.

I would probably have a problem with Sera if I met someone like her in real life. Too much extroverted energy absolutely drains me. I'd probably offer her some caramels or other candy to keep her busy.

I think I would enjoy being around her, but I have ADHD sooo. even if she would be draining, there's something energizing about being around someone who shares your particular brand of brain dysfunction, lmao.

In some ways, I appreciate Sera because of the lack of being able to turn her to your understanding.

I have a very dear friend who can be very inflexible. Some topics, no matter how personal they are to you, are not worth discussing because it can be like smashing your head into a brick wall. The more you try to reach out and explain your perspective, the more defensive and cold she gets. I'm the type who always wants to understand, always wants to stop the fight by connecting with someone, so that took me a long time to get. Now I know, she's a great friend. She's funny and loyal and intelligent and would be there in a crisis, but her inability to let go of whatever makes her so rigid there is not something that will change, so I have to learn to not push her, because it's not fair to either of us.

Sera's like that. There are some characters I couldn't date her with (elfy elves) because I couldn't date that friend of mine, just that level of conflict without resolution doesn't work for me in an intimate relationship, but I can always love her.

My personal take on Sera is that she didn't really realise what she was getting into with the inquisition, feels out of her depth, and clings to her beliefs as a security net *shrugs* understandable really, everyone hs their own coping strategies. It takes a lot of struggle and compromise to make her like my Inquisitors, but that's because they're a bit like me- nosy, unwilling to dismiss anything, and occasionally a bit preachy in attempts to do the right thing. Someone like Sera who sees things in black and white is bound to find that frustrating.

ok... I think I just found the hate thread everyone is talking about... I clicked it expecting a debate, or some analyzing, or talking about ways of improvement (for those left heartbroken or something, yeah?) or something of the like... the title seemed to be an open to discussion not... you don't start a topic like that and.. it wasn't even a topic it was just... a rant... there's nothing to be discussed it's just... yeah just a hate thread. What a let-down.

I mean I wish there were a way to compromise on the break-up situation for an elf, because Sera should understand... like you dont have to be preachy to her or try to convert her, but like when Cass is teasing her about her fear of magic its "excuse me for being afraid of something i was told to fear my whole life" but she can't just look at the inquisitor and see the "excuse me for believing something I was raised to believe my whole life"... but It's just Sera's in the moment, she's not thinking about the other shoe, she's thinking about her own health without realizing she's damaging the other person's... (or potentially damaging, depending on how you play your inquisitor) she probably realizes it after the break up... like right after, but there's no going back... no potential make-up scene - would've been nice (sort of like That "Buckles" Fic someone posted here forever ago I re-read that fic so many times...so...many...times)  But yeah... that thread did not go in the direction i was hoping for at all.

I agree, that was uncalled for. I guess I'm just tired. People are entitled to their opinions, just sometimes it makes me sad that their arguments for calling someone "mental" is their manner of speech.

The rest of your post is very well put.

Cheers.

I'm doing a playthrough of elven mage that is in a relationship with Sera and I really want to drink from the well just to see how it will turn out.

BC, I feel that. I'm very friendly and extroverted sometimes so I tend to have a lot of friends from all over the map, but I get depleted and cranky easily too, so most of my close friends tend to be introverts, hehe.

No problem, and thank you. I don't want to see people get warning points over a small thing like that.

It's going to be lively, that's for sure. :D
