I'm not sure if happy was the right word for Merrill...oblivious might be a more appropriate term.

I have a feeling Vivienne may qualify. Her life, especially by mage standards, was quite charmed. She had the ear of the Empress of Orlais, was First Enchanter, and had more power than most nobles. After Asunder, well...so much for that. I think Sera and Varric are filling the role of "every man" in this adventure.
Maybe. But if what Leliana wrote about The Game in WoT is true, Vivienne may have had some difficulty holding onto her charmed life. But yes, I don't imagine Sera will play that part.

As long as she's not too bland *cough* Jacob from Mass Effect *cough* For those of you who haven't played ME Jacob Taylor was a squad member in the second game who stuck out like a sour thumb because he was so normal it was painful.
I was willing to sacrifice Jacob being bland because he was one fiiiiine specimen.
I have a strong feeling Sera is anything but bland.

I think Merrill was still torn up about Tamlen. She just didn't show it much unless you got close to her.
Let's face it. None of our companions have been happy.

Merrill only becomes happy if she romances Hawke, before that she is into all that jazz that the dalish are into: ''Me home land is gone, I pick up pieces of glass and rocks because they meant a lot.''
Zevran yeah, not the best life.
I mean more like... like.. have we met any happy people in DA?

I loved how in the Shadow Broker dlc one of the spy cams was of a shirtless Jacob doing sit ups.
Yeah, judging from that picture alone there's little chance of her being bland.

merrill was definitely not happy (imo). yes she was ditzy and an optimist, but she was so torn apart inside at the losses of her clan and how they are her fault each time for not protecting them. she hides behind the smiles.

^This. I always felt she was smarter and less clueless than she let on.
As to happy people in DA Cailan maybe? He was torn apart by Darkspawn, does that disqualify him?

One thing I liked about Zevran. He had a very bizarre and screwed up past, but he didn't act haunted and burdened by it all the time. He enjoyed the life he was granted and rolled with the punches. In that regard, I'm hoping him and Sera are the same.
@Kain LOL No doubt. I guess that's a lesson: Don't be a happy person expecting fairy tales in Thedas. You'll die very quickly.

Cailan was probably ecstatic right until to the end.
"Ah, a valiant defeat, the great king struck down in the prime of life. Kidneys crushed, liver ruptured, just like in the old tales. Glorious."
he was still cheering as he got slaughtered. even as he laid dying, he kept a smile

I'd rather think it was, "No wait, my spleen doesn't belong there. Hey, that's my bowels next to pieces of my intestines. I think I need that! Ow, my spine! Oh hey, what's that bright light up ahead..."

Ah Cailan I always forget how shockingly Naive you were. I love it when a City Elf flat out tells him about murdering Vaughn for raping Shianni. It's the one time I remember seeing his happy King mask slip.

I think a few people are. Varric seemed to be doing just fine until the Bartrand incident. See, that's my other fear with Sera. They'll give her a relatively peaceful past, only to have the events of the game/PC incur some tragedy. You know, we have to kill her mother because she's an abomination. Of course, that's after Sera's mother killed her sibling(s) and father too. Then the house is going to have a Veil tear in it, some how and we have to burn down her childhood home.
That's just how the DA team rolls. ![]()
