So Bull and Dorian got together in my playthrough...

Sera compared it to "falling of a tree into custard. Too high... Too fast... Splat!"

OK... :D

I still like them both myself even though they say many not so nice things towards Sera. I think Solas' remarks cut more deep though, you're the furthest from what we ought to be and she turned her back on her people and yadda yadda yadda. Also he can be condescending towards an elven Inquisitor, 2 playthroughs Crim felt it. :P

My Dalish mage was surprised in the early parts of my current PT at how much better she got along with Sera than Solas in this playthrough - no matter what she said or did, Baldylocks would frown and snark at her.

Solas and Vivienne are written very well and with great consistency. I suspect that had that not been the case, I would not want to set them on fire quite so badly.

I usually lurk in this thread, but I thought this turned out nicely

It really did, and now I want those boots so much.

And out of curiosity, for those of us who haven't already talked about what kind of cookies their Inquisitor and Sera make as "us cookies", what kind would you go with and why?

Whisper and Sera make gingersnaps, because A: They're simple to make, B: Neither of them have ever made cookies before, so refer back to A, and C: Whisper's a redhead and Sera loves puns.

there was...someone in Emprise Du Lion on this run that I never noticed...I...have no idea what they are. A dwarf? Their head looks...too long for their body. And they didn't talk...just...watching. Eh. Was I tripping too hard like...what was that? Has anybody else encountered this?

Everyone but me seems to have met this person.

It is glitch or easter egg?

Don't think so, I've stumbled across that dwarf in all my playthroughs so far.

Also that confession tag that's pretty impressive, that a character from a game would affect someone's life like that.

Terrible writing, huh?

It always makes me so angry when I read and hear that stuff about family not accepting, though... I have no kids but if I did their sexuality would be pretty much the least of my concerns. I'd be much more worried that they found a relationship that made them happy.

This happened just after I secured the keep there and freed the people and killed those red templar fools. the same area where you fight red templars when you first get to Emprise Du Lion...I have no idea who or what that is. My Inquisitor looked at them like: "......."

The bad writing complaint regarding the characters drives me up a wall. (the main story is another matter). What constitutes bad writing exactly? I saw someone complain about Cassandra being a yes-woman. They forget that she saw first hand, several times, what infighting can do to an organization. It tore the mages, the templars, the seekers and the Chantry to pieces. Of course she would not kick up a fuss once the decision was made. Too late and all that.

A character is badly written when they are mere plot devices and their personality changes for the sake of drama/coolness/comedy. Let's take Sera as an example: she is consistently terrified of supernatural phenomena. If she suddenly became fearless because, hey badass!, it would be bad writing. If the game showed her progressively overcoming her fear, then it would make sense that she could overcome it completely at some point. Here? She gets more scared as the game progresses because the weird just keeps getting weirder.

Spoiler

On another note, Sera's recruitment quest. After the fight, if you pick the option 'did you set me up?', Sera is baffled that you would think that. She brushes it aside with a 'if I'd wanted you dead, you'd be dead' joke, but it's revealing of several things about her.

How does she get into contact with the Inquisition? An anonymous message attached to an arrow, then dead drops in three other locations. The whole thing is pretty cryptic. Why does she do it that way? She says 'So, you followed the notes easy enough, glad to see you're...' then she cuts herself off to make a remark about our race. What was she going to say?

Perhaps something to the effect of being able to listen, but there is something else. The Breach and the tears opening everywhere are a mystery. She wants to find someone who will make sense of it, so she gives you a mystery to solve. She's testing your curiosity, so to speak. That's why she never shows up if we don't do that quest. Why would she waste her time with someone who won't investigate leads?

The thing is that it never even occurs to her that her shenanigans could be seen as a setup. She didn't mean it that way, thus she can't imagine someone taking it that way. That's her lack of ability to put herself in other people's shoes right there.

Then there's the whole setup: it's needlessly complicated and could have gone really wrong. That's her poor planning skills.

Also, it would have been a lot simpler to just go up to the Herald/Inquisitor and tell them about that guy, but that wouldn't have been fun for her. That's her skewed priorities. It shows up again with the breeches theft.

Now the good. She steps in and kills a guard and the other idiot really quickly once we get there, meaning she was waiting for us. Her network of informants is effective. She's also a good fighter. She also knew reinforcements would be coming. Again, her network is good. The fact that she helped us in the fight (even if she got it started) shows that she's wiling to help. She could have easily stayed hidden to watch the show and reveal herself only after we won. She's not cold. What mattered to her was that we were willing to listen and solve a mystery. She's not one of those 'you only deserve help if you can help yourself' types.

Rambling done.

The bad writing complaint regarding the characters drives me up a wall. (the main story is another matter)...

.....Rambling done.

Okay had to shorten that for reposting.  As much as I dislike Sera personally, I can't judge her writing.  It is especially hard to evaluate a character's writing when you don't fully understand the character's point of view, or can easily imagine that character as a 'real' person because you have known someone like them in real life.

I don't think its just about curiosity or mystery. I thinks he is hiding it, but she is afraid, and given she feels many emotions in a somewhat childish manner, she has this visceral terrified reaction to something like the hole in the sky, and what that implies if the seat of the maker is real, like some of her early comments  in the game.

She knows this is really big, really bad, and that means lil people getting hurt even more. I think her fear drives her to you, and makes her actually consider and get to know the Inquisitor when she might not have otherwise.

The tears are a problem, and she's afraid of that problem and wants them fixed...as soon as possible.  In several conversations she comes across, to me, as a scared child trying to be brave.  I really feel think fear is a big part of her motivation in the current situation.

I'd be curious to see what everyone else thinks of that idea, about fear, and what kind of role fear of these big complex world changing events beyond what she normally likes to think about play in her personality in the game.

I completely agree with the comment about her lack of ability to consider other people's viewpoints, or any desire to do so.

Why does Gaider mostly respond to crap like that, and not the more thoughtful inquiries? I agree with his response, although I do wish Viv had been written by a black woman, or at least someone more sensitive to the issues there, but like. I think he doesn't pick his battles well, lmao, and I don't get it.

Hello, thread! Had quite a few pages to catch up, you people write a lot (and I love it)!

Ahhhh! Just got to pull pranks with Sera. Man that was fun! <3

Why did I ever dislike her so much before? Soo grateful I entered this thread, y'all converted me!

One of us! One of us! One of us! :wizard:

Lol y''all talking bout coasting it on nightmare, I won't even go outta my comfort zone on normal ever. Y'all are cray cray no wonder you like Sera. :P

Lol, yesterday I tried to do Champions of the Just on Nightmare with 8 potions not upgraded and without top notch equip...I managed to arrive to the boss with a sliver of health with no potions left before dying. Yup, I'm crazy and I love Sera, it can't be a coincidence.

This is great news.

And this is why it's so important that Bioware keeps being inclusive. Also, if we're in sharing mood, Liara's and Leliana's romances had the same effect on me, they helped me figuring out what I am/like. So yeah, it's important. Some might think that romances in Bioware games are just a silly side content thingy, but they can actually prove life changing for someone else.

My apologies if it was tmi, I'll edit the post if it's too much.

Why would that be too much?

You don't have a tongue? or fingers? or nails? or lips? or teeth? or a nose? or eyelashes? The possibilities are endless!

Is it just me or are the eyelashes in DA:I a little odd? They never seem to look right.

Page 1914. World War I soon?

Well this is going to be a rough fifty pages.

Man, BioWare has some real issues with writing inspiring speeches. Probably because they're too long and purple, like they're trying to do St. Crispin's Day every time instead of something that a real person might actually say in a moment of inspiration. And the voice actors aren't always up for the job.

Kirrahe's pep talk is probably the best of a bad lot, but yeesh.

You're going to have to post your top ten inspiring speeches from history now.

This is great news.

Last line is sad though.

What issues with Vivienne?

That the long suffering stoic black woman who is alone and doesn't get taken care of but gets crap done is not a new thing. It really feels like they thought "make her badass!!!" was the best direction to take her, and it's been pretty alienating to many of the folk I know. Shrug. Like, I am not waggling angry fingers here or anything, but...that I can see, and sympathize with. Possible my inital comment was too strong, I'm not hating on Kirby, just...you know, some of us wanted more...and it's not a case of "wanting the character to be different' so much as "wishing they hadn't ignored that part of her character, especially in context of her race"

Unlike that ask which was like.... no matter what issues you may have with her as a character, she did come across as a well written character whose sexuality was not all IM A MAAAAN WHO DOESNT GET LESBIANSSSS!!!~~~

@Artemis

I don't see why a video game and its characters couldn't be life changing. How many people had their life changed by a song? A movie? A book? A play? Just because the medium is more recent doesn't mean it can't do those things.

And I agree about the characters having an effect. For me, the characters make me ask all kinds of questions. I like this character. Why is that? What is it that makes me like them? I dislike this character. Why is that? What is it about them that annoys me? Why does it annoy me?

I have recently turned my attention to Josephine as there is something about her that just makes me grind my teeth (I like her overall, but there is something that bothers me) and I finally figured it out. It's a fun mental exercise.

You're preaching to the choir, since I wholeheartedly agree that a videogame character can prove life changing. ^^

I was more referring to people I know that think the media is just "something for kids, that can't possibly have good writing" (also implying that something aimed at kids must be silly and dumb, which enrages me to no end). I eyeroll every time I hear them say such things.

And I do ask myself questions about characters too, sometimes it also leads me to understand things about my own character as well. :)

I don't really see that at all with Viv, she's pretty much like Morrigan and Miranda is that aspect
