Taking everyones feeling in to consideration is admirable, but ultimately will lead to pretty short conversations. People will take offense of anything. But people are usually free to choose who they associate with and which conversations to participate in. If i'd take to heart everything i hear that offends me but isn't actually directed at me, i would have exploded of rage long ago. This isnt to say that one shouldn't be civil, if not polite, as much as possible. Nobody likes an intentional douche. But i strongly object to anyone getting muzzled just because someone MIGHT be offended.
I was referring more to the bolded part. I like discussions and I don't expect everyone to agree with me (it's actually more interesting when they disagree). I try to see the other person's point of view and understand where they're coming from, but that won't stop me from sticking to my guns if I think they're wrong.
But there's a way to have such conversations without resorting to name-calling or rudeness. It's harder with issues we hold dear because then emotions get into the mix and the brain goes all 'get off my lawn!'.
