Now i can see where Misoteru comes from.

Sigh.

What "background" makes someone gay or straight or bi?

Everyone else's background.

But their has to be "an idiot"

This does not help me. There are literally, thousands of different places I could find your fanfic. Can't you just save me a century and post a link to it?  ^_^

There's a thread on the Mass Effect fan fiction board.

Wasn't too bad. I wish I didn't feel bad. I could've had like... chapter 7 by now.

And even if we take it from a storytelling perspective: none of the characters need to be straight/gay/bi/other either. They don't need to have a sexuality or be available to the player at all.

Well, you could grow up surrounded by the same gender, never seeing, hearing or learning anything about the other sex. Though that isn't really making someone gay.

I knew not of this board. Thank you. I shall search for it when I get an opportunity.  ^_^

Yeah. I still want to get back to it, eventually...

Hopefully I will. It's an interesting story, IMHO.

And I picked a good area. Barely anything known about Quarians.

I detect a whiff of that old 'people aren't really gay they've just been traumatized by the other sex' mentality.

The game was still written through an Andrastian human lens so it's not all that surprising.

It's not, no.

It's just when you strip out all the doing plot things you have the story of some kid being held up as prophet fighting against a would be god, and there's a pile of elfy god stuff in the background. Religion and faith and truth are all ripe for being interesting themes but... they're not explored.

I grew up surrounded by hetero couples in real life, movies, literature, games, etc. It didn't make me straight for some reason.

Which i find it hilarious when some straight people are afraid they might "turn gay" if they see a show about gay people or make gay friends.

Considering how society is heavily heteronormative, yet there are lots of gay people.

And thus endeth my emerald crusader playthrough and the sweeter-than-pie Josie romance (seriously, even they even snuck away from the party in the cutest fashion possible) and Sera has found a family in the inquisition.
But.
Once again, I had the 'I don't believe in gods' as the only special option when meeting coryphy-t*ts for the final time. All the dialogue choices I made regarding faith to that point, when no pro-elven choices were offered, were mainly against chantry as an organisation or generally against me being a herald of anything. So bioware logic is that you either see divine providence in everything or you are not a believer in anything. *sigh* Yeah....that's exactly how that works    You know, I remember a time when Bioware writing was actually good. The last 3 games it's only been the characters that have had decent writing :(

I wonder how much of this was from converting to multiple races mid-way through development. It worked really well for Tressa who became disillusioned with all gods, though. For me it was like they wrote the game precisely with my dream playthrough in mind. I couldn't have been more happy.

I heard the most ridiculous critique of a song once: it was a love song from a man to another man. The critic said it was 'pandering' to the LGBT community. Why is that stupid? The artist is gay. He wrote it for his boyfriend. We have thousands of songs from a man to a woman or vice versa and that's ok, but one gay man writes a love song for his boyfriend and ooooh! It's pandering!

Much as I love player agency, lately I've been wondering how realistic it is to expect that in the open ended package RPGs typically promise, and how powerful it can be anyway.

Dalish religion does tie straight into DAI's core themes though, so it's kind of weird for it not to be there suddenly.

The problem I have is that everything after DAO has seen the rpg elements diluted in to non-existence. I actually call DAI an rpg only reluctantly because the choices about who your player character is amount to choosing the color of the drapes. Granted, it's miles ahead of pretty much everything else on the market misusing the rpg label. Would have been maybe be able to forgive it if the actual story was any good but as it is, it's a disjointed, incoherent mess. Playing any race besides human magnifies this a hundredfold as the script flip-flops between acknowledging your race and beliefs and just assuming its the default andrastian human.

Sometimes I feel Inquisition would have been better suited as a good old RTS (Real Time Strategy). Conquer territories, build bases, get troops, etc.

It feels strange to be both the leader and the top 'grunt' if you will. I keep thinking this game has a split personality.

Considering how society is heavily heteronormative, yet there are lots of gay people.

I know that whenever I want to ignore my own nature and pretend I can make a decision about who I am...I ALWAYS consult my background.  To ensure I am correctly making a fallacious choice, I find using Excel sheets for reference is particularly useful.  I recommend this to everyone else.  I can look at all those important background factors that tell me who I am with appropriate contrast and weight.  For instance how many times my mother hugged me compared to how much money my father made compared to the specific sermons my pastor used in church.

Its particularly difficult in my case, as our church changed pastors, which presents a conflict on which sermons I should consider more heavily when deciding who I should be.

I also like to be thorough, so I go back to my great grandparents when reference what views I should have, how I should act, and what I should be thinking.

I really think you need a system, I mean if you aren't letting your background and society dictate who you are, what you believe, who you love, and how you think, where are you going to get your identity!!!!!

It could just be the old you have to justify non-hetro sexuality otherwise it's being shoved down the audience's throat.

Or as simple as wanting something and coming up with poor justifications for it.

I'd be down for a strat game with BioWare dialogue and dynamic plot bits. Or any genre really.

The problem I have is that everything after DAO has seen the rpg elements diluted in to non-existence.

I'd call DA:O a mixed success on that front as well.

Wait, that can happen?

I have to say I strongly disagree.  Its not perfect, and not as good as DA:O but it is far from a disjointed, incoherent mess.  And if nothing else, the choice between mage and templar very much changes many aspects of  the game,

Spoiler

Not starting a debate, just adding my opinion, or 'vote', on the quality of the game to the discussion.  Its very subjective and we all have our own experiences, and a right to our own opinions, of course.
