Another elven soul, Crim approves.
From my limited knowledge of dueling, it wasn't that common to fight over a woman. Most duels had to do with politics and social standing. I think I read somewhere that dueling over a woman was not well perceived and it usually stained the lady's reputation as a heartless manipulator who made good men die for her.
It happened, but I don't think it was all that common.
I think it did happen but you're right that it was more common for duels to be fought over politics and reputation. The 1712 duel between the Duke of Hamilton and Baron Mohun in England or Aaron Burr vs Alexander Hamilton being the more common occurrence at least among famous duels.
Now I do know of an interesting duel between Kit Cavanaugh, a woman posing as a man in the British Army, and her company sergeant, during the Nine Years War, that was reputedly over a woman. Kit killed her sergeant in the duel and was thrown out of the army for it. She later rejoined the army by enlisting in a Scots cavalry regiment.

That's a story that has everything going for it.
We need more duel scenes in media
cos reasons.
Personally I find the idea of duelling (especially to the death) to be patently ridiculous. The idea of intellectual or romantic disputes being decided my martial prowess seems pretty backward to me. It does make for exciting scenes in entertainment, though.
I do like the story of Rudolf Virchow's proposed sausage duel with Otto von Bismarck, even if it may be apocryphal.

They ought to make a film of her life. She served in the British army from the early 1690's to 1706 so she saw action in both the Nine Years War and the War of The Spanish Succession. She joined to track down a husband who had been press-ganged into service but she liked soldiering and had romantic affairs with women while serving. She was only found out in 1706 when she was wounded at Ramillies and forced to leave the army for good. Interestingly though they did allow her to keep all her medals and her pension.
I'm getting so many Merrill vibes with my elf. ![]()
She's a kind spirited, loves dalish culture, doesn't sass and isn't aggresive. She prefers to deal with things calmly.
... maybe that's why she's literally Merrill 2.0 Also the looks. Welp.

Throw in some blood magic moments then you got your Merrill. ![]()

She should romance Solas, then. Torchwood reunion!

She's also known as Mrs. Christian Davies and "Mother Ross."

I've read other accounts of women in disguise being recognised but keeping their benefits. Generally people seem to be fairly level headed about the whole thing.

Na, she pins for Josie. ![]()
I was going to play a qunari next (warrior or rogue...idk).
But then I'm curious how the human mage background is different from non-mage...hmmmm.
So, I made another elf...warrior.
I've played regular human and am currently playing mage human. Not much difference really, except for the mage specific dialogue that you get with pretty much any mage.

Elves and humans though, hard to beat can't blame ya. Circle mage is great fun, had a bloody good reason to be at the conclave, felt more connected to the mage/temp war plus nobility moments, you can be reluctant about your connections or happy to use them. Loved my human mage run.

Whenever I think of dueling and how it was employed in historical times, I hear Carl Sagan's line from his most excellent Pale Blue Dot speech ringing in my head:
Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.
I've heard of the sausage duel. I was originally skeptic of the truthfulness of the story but now I understand it. It's pretty interesting.

Oh I don't know. The Josie romance benefits from a few 'rewatch' bonuses.
Look at this picture carefully.
Naughty, naughty Josie!

Okay, that's what I thought. I played one for a bit and it seemed like most dialog was similar (like when talking to Josie about your family). War table missions are the same I think but I only did the first one on a mage.
I still think elves get the better war table stuff if you don't eff it up...
I think you get the best of human noble, but better reasons for being at the conclave and people reacting badly to you. Like being feared in Orlais by the Chantry made a lot more sense than my human warrior. But you still get both noble and mage dialogue with Josie, for example. Or different convos with Vivienne.

That's after the duel. The hand is not so 'ahem' frisky with a Qunari. Instead it's her face that's frisky. ![]()
