I think it's important to remember that spirits, as far as I've seen in DA, don't identify with specific genders, and it was pure chance that Cole is in a male body. He may not care at all whether Sera calls him "it", even if we as players see it as dehumanizing...he's not human.

I really do form my opinion about characters partly based on the whole group's interpersonal relations. I don't see why it's really a problem. It's pretty normal for how people react to other people inside their social circle. So, if characters argue a lot, I'm probably going to end up picking a side. When it's more teasing, like Alistair and Morrigan, it doesn't really come to that. When it's really bitter and unpleasant, like Anders vs Fenris, or Anders AND Fenris vs Merrill, then it's a different story. With Anders and Merrill it was especially hard, because I really liked Anders in every other way, but he was a huge jerk to Merrill and I more agreed with her view on spirits/demons than his.
But this sort of thing will make the new interactive party banter system all the more interesting. I can't wait to see it in action. It'll be interesting to see what effect that has, if you can sway certain people or if disagreeing will just make them bitter towards you.

I think it's pretty obvious that Cole identifies himself as a male, though. While this may be a technical fact, I can't imagine it's meant in an actually non-offensive, non-hurtful way.

I don't think it's necessarily obvious, but I get what you're saying.

Why are we talking about his gender here though, I don't get it? Oh cause of what Sera said? Please. I'm sure it has nothing to do with his gender and everything with the fact that he appears to be dead.

It's determining whether Sera is being literal or a jerk about a companion, I'm guessing.

Here's the way I see it. We, the player, are Frodo. Cole is Gollum/Smeagol. Sera is Sam.
Cole is someone who is obviously untrustworthy, but less obviously has another side to him. We see it, Sera doesn't. It's understandable that Sera doesn't, but our ability to see it alienates us from Sera.
The question is, will Cole bite off our fingers and then fall into a volcano?

Let's be honest, it's about fangirlism and fanboyism. People don't even know exactly why Sera won't trust Cole, if it is legetimate or not, and they are already infuriated.
I mean, come on. We had people hating on Anders, because he was " mean " to Merril. LMAO !

And I honestly don't think Cole cares much about gender. As far as I know, insults are insults only if it is insulting to the person at hand no?

While I don't hate Anders (and Merrill isn't one of my favourites), I absolutely loathed how he acted towards her (as well as the other one, Fenris), so no, I don't think It's about being a fanboy/fangirl.Let's be honest, it's about fangirlism and fanboyism. It's true that there's a lot of basis that Sera wouldn't trust Cole, but Sera is an elven thief, so I think it's a bit of a glass house situation. Most of Thedas wouldn't smile on her, either.

I doubt that Sera is as familiar with Cole as the readers of Asunder are. If Sera (and Vivienne) simply see a spirit inhabiting a mortal body, they may be immediately distrustful because of what they have been taught as Andrastians, and what usually happens when a spirit is possessing a corpse (like the tragedy at Redcliffe village, or the current crisis in the Dales). Since Sera isn't a mage, the Breach may be her first experience with spirits.
With the Breach leading to an invasion by all kinds of spirits from the Beyond (who are likely harming and killing all the sentient life they come across), she might have amble reason to be wary of Cole.

It's possible that Cole doesn't care what gender people call him, but the point is more Sera's intention. From the context of the interview, it seems to be implied that she means it in an insulting way. I don't think it's really a semantic issue.

Elven thief isn't nearly as seriously as murderous spirit? Don't get me wrong, I'm a BIG fan of Cole's, but I see her side without a doubt. Comparing the two is a bit extreme.

What is the reason that some people are saying they won't like Sera if she doesn't like Cole, or won't take her in their team, other than the fact that they love Cole ? I've read the comments on this board, and from people loving Cole. I never disliked Wynn or Alistair because they didn't like Morrigan. That isn't a reason I find really impressive. What do you know about Sera and her reasons ? Nothing.

Nope. Sylvianus said that people were hating on Anders insulting Merrill because they are fanboy/fangirl of the latter: I questioned if it was in his/her opinion the only way to hate him in that occasion. That is the only reason being discussed.
