I've never read the Harry Potter books, but I've listened to them, as read by Stephen Fry. I thought they were quite enjoyable. In terms of recent-ish kids' fantasy that I'm theoretically too old to have read, though, I preferred Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy.

Pullman's trilogy was great but he's also written some decent young adult fare like his Sally Lockhart series. I read the Potter books and enjoyed them although I was not her target audience. I can see, though, how they'd be too simplistic for some as they do offer a very black and white world of moral choices and characters. But considering they're kids books I don't have a large issue with how she chose to do things.

I've never read Harry Potter either, but I have immense respect for JK Rowling. Probably the only billionaire I'd say that about...

Oh them, I forgot about them. I felt the first was the best though, I didn't really want to move on to other worlds when the first had airships* and armoured polar bears.

*Okay every alternate universe has airships in it, that's how you know it's an alternate universe.

I was six when I read the first book.

It's okay, I read them at a similar age as well. Everyone read them, lots of adults read them. It's just, once you've read a bit more they're flat and I think it's kind of sad that they form the literary horizon for so many people - not that I've read anywhere near enough books. Also they don't have moving cities that eat each other.

I'm just not above being annoying about it.

When I was getting my degree in as a librarian the Potter series was very popular with librarians especially those specializing in young adult literature. They would tell you the series was simplistic and would offer the same critiques I see here. However it was getting kids into libraries and getting them reading and at the end of the day that was considered quite important. People move on from things like Potter eventually. You never know if that kid who gets hooked on Potter goes on to get hooked on Tolkien or Pullman too.

There can a lot of clues that one has been pulled into an alternate universe, from the obvious ones (the sky is is mauve, man, MAUVE), to those you notice as time goes on (monoarchy perpetuated by shapeshifting unicorns; ambulatory carnivorous trees that bellow), to the really subtle ones ("Why is it that everyone who says the word 'cromulent' is hauled away in windowless carriages?")

But airships do make a wondrous clue.

I agree. How many billionaires can say they made the first bits of their wealth by sitting in a Café because they had no central heating at home?

I grew up with the Harry Potter books. I always loved being the same age as the characters were. I went to the premiere of every movie.

But I threw the 7th book across the room. Bloody irritating novel.

It occurs to me that we are talking about a series where magic users litterally 'wave their tool' to perform magic...

Sera disapproves.

I dunno. I heard that magic wands are quite popular among some women...

The first book, I read at the same time I learned to read. It was the first book I ever read without help, as I remember.

And from then on... Originals are kinda hard to get here.

Most of the books have US covers instead of the UK originals.

Unlike the DA books, which just use game covers (Stolen Throne has Origins', Calling has Awakening's...) as a background.

One day, I'll get a Kindle and read the originals of some books.

Magic fingers and tongues are popular with all women. ;)

See, I think all of those things could be and usually are explained by some other sci-fi reason. Solar flares, genetic zoos gone wrong, common sense. If our discombobulated hero steps out of the shadow of unexplained plot travel and looks up to see an airship, you can be sure someone has been messing up the timelines again.

The strange bit is that fiction which makes more than a passing reference of said airships is surprisingly rare.

(Edit) Though now that you mention it a timeline dominated by shapeshifting unicorns is terrifying.

So now I'm randomly thinking of what wand Sera would have in the unlikely event of her being a Hogwarts student...

Dragon heartstring core I reckon... Willow because of her poem, or Yew as that's a popular wood for longbows? Hmmm...

Oh hey, does Sera say anything to anyone about the Temple of Dirthamen run? I just expected a lot more banter or at least a conversation. I mean,

Spoiler

One might argue that she'd get annoyed by the Temple of Suledin quest, too.

Spoiler

But I don't think that any of the non-story quests generate dialogue outside of a few minor in-quest comments, do they? I was surprised by how little Solas had to say in both those Temples.

I vaguely recall her making a couple of comments but nothing major. Yeah, kinda odd that she ain't freaking out over all the elfy weirdness going on. Though I wonder why Solas doesn't make more comments. I think the man should say a lot more when you read all the rune writings :/

I took her along but that did not generate the same level of comment from her as the Temple in the Western Approach does or the Fade experience does. There wasn't any banter or follow-up convo. It might have been cause I included Solas. I've got the quest coming up in this game and I'll take Dorian along and see if that brings her to life.

Reventant for an elf sword? Where, how what?

I thought I'd get my elf card removed if I skipped The Temple of Dirthamen, but the dialogue/codex entries just isn't worth it. So I'll probably avoid in future.

I just want more dialogue. Like I would buy a DLC that added in more cut scenes and comments!

Exasperating!

Did you do the Sulevin Blade quest? You get it by clicking on something in a kind of hidden campsite in Emprise, and it sends you (after a wartable mission) into this dungeon elsewhere in the world.

I found it by accident when I went behind a rock.

I felt that too. I know there have been complaints of a banter bug even post patch but I feel they could stand to improve some dialogue in places like this even if they aren't directly related to the main plot. Sera does beg you not to take the staff in the Western Approach but for both her an Solas to be largely silent in Dirthamen is kind of odd.
