Evangelion is a very depressing show.

 

On the other hand, Pacific Rim is one of my favorite movies.

 

P.R. was a good movie. But, the Mech designs didn't really do much for me. I was expecting to like them given my love for Getter robo, Gundam and Mechwarrior. They seemed way over the top or to plain in my eyes. 

 

I'm be the first to admit I don't watch much anime, but the series that really got to me was Berserk. Gut's life growing up was awful and for things to play out like they did. Also for him to find a family The Band of the Hawk and have that tore away from him as well. That really pissed me off. Mostly because I know to well what it feels like to finally have things going your way only to have it all tore away and have someone kick you right when you reach as low as you can get.

Well... Since fan interpretation, or headcanon, tends to blow holes into the original work that spelling would be more appropriate than the single 'N'. After all, 'canon' carries an implication of legitimacy that fan theories just do not have.

But regardless, the writing interfered with the fighting. Stryker Eureka taking down Scunner (I think?) with a series of swift stabs was awesome, Cherno Alpha pounding Otachi (Leatherback?), awesome. That's fine, but as soon as anything dramatic is supposed to happen it goes pants-on-head-stupid. Stryker geting EMPed, Gipsy suddenly finding a sword,  Leatherback (Otachi?) growing wings. All boring - also a drink in the EMP's case but that's another story.

 

And that's ignoring that the film is structured as a character drama, and being largely lifted from Evangelion desperately wants to be one.

 

Alright. I'll give you them points. When they pulled out the sword of destiny, I was like "What? Could have saved yourself 10 minutes..." and the EMP thing. Yeah, looks random and just out there but it was entirely within context. Those aliens evolved and so, would develop counter measures like an EMP ability. And the wings... I didn't like the wings...

Well I did the sameeeeeeee with my cat when I had him ....but cat food is....well.....seriously not made for us .

The film featuring giant monsters that annoyed me recently was Godzilla. It was supposed to be some intelligent new western version that went back to the series' Japanese roots, but the human characters in it let the film down so badly. The young couple were so dull and uninteresting that I just couldn't care less about them, and the dad who was quite fun. died early on.

 

Add to that the staggering incompetency of the "scientists".... You have the egg of a creature that you know feeds on radiation so you store with a load of nuclear waste? What? And then people are supposed to listen to your advice? I mean, that film was pretty too, especially in the last half an hour or so, but I was so annoyed with it by that point that I just didn't care.
