Nah you don't have to be pro-chantry if you go that route, I disbanded the Temps twice (qunari run still playing) and first time with my devout elf run (was indifferent to the Chantry.)
The only character who was pro-chantry was my circle mage and she allied with the mages.

When I tried that, I thought about my character getting to know Cassandra, having that disturbing encounter in VR and talking with her about it, and thinking I should go check that out. Not so much chantry lover as investigating something for a friend I'm getting to know.
