tbh part of the reason I don't enjoy conversations with Solas is that the options feel off. Like he starts talking about spirits vs demons and when I try to respond as I think this character would, she sounds really angry and insulting when that's not what I intended (I don't know if that's just the one voice actress, or both, but the words are also not what I intended). So I get a little frustrated because I want to be open to what he's saying without necessarily going all "Yes destroy all the walls and let spirits run FREE SINGING IN THE WIND", but the only other options appear to be getting angry with him. I have trouble navigating conversations with him in a way that feels... middle ground.

 

eta: One can listen respectfully without agreeing completely, and that's what seems to be missing for me

I will give you that, but what right does she have to be awful to our Guide in the Temple of Mythal?

 

None she's just being willfully douchey, I get it you don't like elfy elves, if you have nothing good to say just don't say anything at all would be nice.

BioWare conversations aren't big on that. They're fond of extremes, like their walk animations.

Fair enough with Solas, but in the example Cat gave why should she not have to make any effort to learn her own language? How is Dorian supposed to know what the extent of her vocabulary is before he speaks?

The thing is that Dorian can speak plainly, he does so a lot of times in their banter and he also knows where is she coming from, you get this banter after romancing quizzy. He already knows Sera.

And he still keeps using words she doesn't understand.

Also, you mean making effort to talk to her own lanuguage, like elven? Sera speaks plainly just like everyone else, even if she uses a lot of slangs (or that's how they're called?)

If you meant in elven, why should she? It's like telling me to go and learn chinese language just bc i look like chinese.

I love elfy elf elven stuff so much. I think I've conditioned myself never to talk about it on the BSN, because of obvious reasons, but yeah, nods firmly. Sera is a huge jerk about that, and even if it's often understandable (as in its coming from a sympathetic place) or at least like weirdly endearing to me (since it often manifests with her annoying Solas and that amuses me), it's still jerky.

@wintery, I agree with you. Solas's conversations, from a PC response point of view, are particularly bad IMO. I mean it's not Bioware's forte, subtlely and maturity and people reacting like people etc, but his are really frustrating to me. It's weird because his character is actually so interesting and nuanced and then you can only reapond with WOW SO AMAZE U SO SMART??? or "boy you gonna get urself ate by a demon and then I will smile"

It is especially when you're trying to do a non-elfy elf Lavellan and there is no way to say "hey I am trying to be my own independent person too, ya know Sera, so why don't you cut me a break ya chooch!"

Yeah, which leaves a few questions for me. If Lavellan confronted her over it, or broke down crying, or punched her, how would she react?

Not all of them, but some I certainly wrinkled my nose at. I just mean that you aren't allowed to respond as his equal, it seems.

What was the Solas conversation that bugged me recently? It was after conscripting the Wardens. I chose an option and what my Inquisitor said didn't seem to bear any relation to the paraphrase. It was the worst example of that that I've seen in DAI. I just can't remember what was said...

I had to google some words from Dorian tbh.

 

While yes, she could learn some, i don't see why she should though if she doesn't want to? Sera is not a big fan of big words. Then again they seem to understand her perfectly from what i recal in their banters so all is ok. Dorian could just use simple words for her instead of going to learn big words just to show she's "intelligent".

 

I personally can see where she's coming from, I don't use big words irl (and there are many greek words that hurt my head tbh).
