That's good. My point is that when someone says 'stop using big words I don't understand' it's really easy to hear it as 'you must accommodate me because I can't be bothered to learn new stuff'.

It hurts.

I do try to tailor myself to the people I'm around, but it's almost like wearing a jacket that's just a smidge too tight, you know?

I love the fact that Hugh Lawrie can play House so well when previously everyone in Britain knew him for playing upper-class twits...

*snip*

He may be "House" to many but he'll always be "Bertie Wooster" to me.

I get immense satisfaction from using big words in sentences. Not because I'm trying to show off or be better than someone, but just because the sound of big words makes me happy.

I feel the same way. Except I am trying to show-off.  :P

I hear you, sister. I hear you. Also from personal experience.

Although whereas you or I would probably make an effort to teach the new vocabulary politely. Dorian would likely be a pompous ass about it. ;)

Emmental is delish and don't even get me started on sweet potato fries.

Because a) until this moment in my life I never knew emmental existed, and B) conversations in thread today, I read this line and thought it said "Emmental is Dalish" because that's what my eyes do, so naturally I wondered who this "Emmental" guy is, and did I miss a quest somewhere.

It's okay, I did that too! I had to re-read it, because I was like "Wait, are we talking about Dalish cooking practices now?"

Now someone has to make a Dalish Elf named Emmental for their game. You've given me an idea here Wintery!

I disagree, cooking is quite hard.

Roamingmachines "Can't be arsed but still won't touch fast food" dinner:
Instant noodles (a block, not the stuff that's already in the cup
bits of sausage
whatever veggies you have on hand, chopped up

Put ingredients in to a pot of boiling water. Season according to taste. Let boil until the water is gone.

Even Sera could do it :P

I'm never sure how rough the Dalish are supposed to live, but they have a lot of hunters so I guess they're pretty big on game?

I have a friend who managed to burn water once. Well, that's what he said. Here's what really happened:

He was trying to make Kraft Dinner, didn't read the directions. Dropped everything in the pot with water (meaning the noodles, cheese dust, butter, and milk) turned it onto high and then went off to go play a game and forgot about it until the smoke alarm went off.

smh.

Bags of frozen veggies keep for a long time, stirfry or cook with beans or meat, so many options and if I'm feeling unmotivated this week/month, they don't go bad like salad fixins.

Or yeah, noodles because noodles.

That right there is the cornerstone of the problem. You assume he is doing it to show off. It's very likely that he was surrounded by that kind of language from birth and it doesn't even occur to him that other people would not know what that means.

Sera jumps to the same conclusion you did: he is being a snob.

But he's not. He's just talking naturally. I can really relate to Dorian on this.

Nope, i don't assume he's doing it to show off since i know he learned to speak that way, so is Sera not using words she doesn't understand. Poeple are different. The thing is, Dorian can speak plainly. He knows, they talk a lot. Sera can't use big words because she didn't grew up that way. And yes, she could learn some but imo, i don't see why she should if people already understand her... if it happened that way, i'm sure she'd learn some.

Dorian and Sera get along well together so i'll bet she learned some from him since he also explains the meaning of the words he uses (bless him tbh :P). Wish there was banter that showed this.

wow calm down ppl, this thread moves so fast.

Yeah, which leaves a few questions for me. If Lavellan confronted her over it, or broke down crying, or punched her, how would she react?

The way she keeps poking Lavellan with it, something has to give, that first playthrough good lord teeth gritting.

I don't know why, but the part of this that really amused me is that humanity has invented "cheese dust".

We've come so far.

Don't like vegetables.

...What is wrong with you? Veggies are delicious!

Sautee chopped mushrooms and zucchini in a pan with a little butter / garlic olive oil and season with salt and onion powder. Delicious side dish!

Steam carrots, sprinkle with parsely flakes. Also delicious.

Sautee red/yellow/orange peppers with a little bit of no-stick pan spray.

Wilted spinach in a browned butter sauce!

It just grates when people accuse you of snobbery because of how you talk. Truly it grieves me that one would harbor enmity towards me on account of my diverse repository of vocabulary. :)

I would think so and harvesting forest greens. I like to think they have a lot of dandelion salad and berries. :P
