this person....literally is trying to tell people that words only hurt because they allow them to....


let me tell you something...words put into practice form systemic institutions to oppress poc. we didn't choose to have it hurt...it literally does. you need to understand that that cannot be applied to every situation in life....and to just say that...unreal man. unreal. holy hell. saying something can only offend you if you let it is just the weakest cop out and it usually comes from people in a place of privilege. good lordt. am I in the Twilight Zone or the weird part of Youtube? Cause I swear I'm feeling less and less comfortable in this thread...on this forum every day.

It's actually my favorite topic and I have to disagree here. For every positive portrayal there is negative one. The usual way to create some drama in lesbian relationship is to make one of the women involved sleep with a man. Sometimes the writers have as much "respect" to not make the gay one do so (Last Tango in Halifax - where after her bi girlfriend cheated on with a man to get pregnant year ago recently the lesbian partner has been killed off shortly after them having a wedding), but oftentimes, the lesbian just suddenly finds herself craving sex with a man (last year in Waterloo Road, where lesbian was chased by a man who wanted to turn her, and then right after he opened emotionally himself to her they had passionate sex, or also from last year, EastEnders, where one lesbian slept with a man while being drunk, and her also lesbian partner did some non-showed "stuff" with a man to get pregnant few months later, or In the Club, where lesbian too had sex with a man to get pregnant).

 

Also just from last year in regard to non-commited lesbians, Dracula where lesbian slept with a man and it looked like she had the best time of her life (the creator himself admitted it enouraged homophobic myths and said that he and the writers intended for her to look traumatized, but during execution of episode something went wrong), Faking It although this one deserves a bit more explanation for another time, or Hell on Wheels, although in this case the character was never labelled which has been quickly used as defense.

There's also movie with Al Pacino, The Humbling, hitting theaters this year and it's story of a lesbian basically being turned into wifey of much older man.

 

Even the work that is generally considered positive for representation often plays with those tropes. In Pretty Little Liars, out lesbian character suddenly made out with a man and was "confused", there were provided two opposite explanations by different characters - one that she did it because he reminded her her dead girlfriend, another, because "sexuality is fluid". It seems it was pushed by producer (who's gay man BTW), because he was talking in interviews before the season started that she will fall for this "sweet, sexy guy".

Or another, Lost Girl, where they invented some crazy fantasy scenario just to make the lesbian character be showed having sex with a man without it actually happening. The showrunner even admitted that they did so because some male fans wanted to see it, and apparently thought they were so tactful and respectful because they didn't do it "for real".

 

I have heard of exactly two of these, and I have not seen any of them.

I guess I've just been lucky enough to live a sheltered life when it comes to the media and being conditioned against lesbians.

We just need to leave all of the crap that was said 2 pages ago alone. It's not doing any good constantly bringing it up. I get what you are saying. I don't agree that any form of racism should just be taken and not reacted to. Hell, I reacted like I said before maybe a week ago and I still feel bloody brilliant about it. But bringing all of this up now is just upsetting. We've just seen some kittens, why do we need to go back to discrimination so soon?

i think he's talking about how in a lot of set-ups (and iirc, he has a 360 so low quality graphics, that might be one of the set-ups) she looks just straight up caucasian. 

 

probably a side effect of the way darker colors are handled in general in the game. not just skin, bur hair colors too.  like, here's a comparison between CC and in game for the darkest skin tone and hair color and one of the lighter skin tones and hair colors. you can see there's variance between the two lighting styles in both examples, but it's much stronger when you're dealing with darker tones, they tend to look a lot lighter than you'd expect when you're generating them. i'm guessing bria's more caucasian appearance for some people is due to that.

you said words can only do damage or offend if a person allows them to...that is NOT a universal truth. if I wanted to totally ignore homophobia, racism, and misogyny...i'd literally have to not exist in this world. all of those things start at words. I can't ignore offensive ish because it's shoved in my face every. damn. day. I don't look for it...it's literally the society that was created. And the only time a person can't see that is when they're in a privileged sect that doesn't have to deal with it or chooses to ignore it and not stand in solidarity with oppressed people(I also don't care for apologist ass poc but that is neither here nor there). I don't have that luxury. There are children coming behind my generation...I aim to help them. Unfortunately they are already being taught that their lives don't matter but I digress. idk...how to break that down any further.
