So...I feel silly asking this but...what does poetess mean? I remember Leliana saying that to the Templar And I could tell it wasn't about poetry. Or was it?

I originally thought she meant the fact she was a Bard. Poets/poetesses and Bards seem to be of a rather similar ilk in some aspects.
 
But no. The Templar was a man, so she backed out lying she's a lesbian.
She's actually bi, just in case you did not know.
Still, good excuse is good.

A "poet" is the name given to someone who writes poems. It is also the name given to someone who has a vivid imagination. "Poetess" would be the feminine off that.
