I saw a TV show not too long ago that took place during the Boshin War, and a group of women in Aizu apparently fought as a group with naginatas in the war. They definitely had the reach on swords, but in both the show and real life they lost because the other side had guns.

 

What was really kind of cool was that the show portrayed the female characters as getting together periodically to practice and talk about what was going on. Just something the wives and daughters of the community would do (though only upper class I guess). So you could see that they'd been training for a long time before they actually had to use those skills.

Well, I'd like to learn a bit of archery, maybe swordsmanship.Slings are also pretty interesting, now that I got to know more about them.Imagine being seriously injured by a sling in war. Insult to injury. Quite literally.That's actually the best thing about ancient weaponry. We have advanced so much that now we have protection from MODERN weapon systems.But what we dropped to protect againist those, is protection from older weapon systems. It's a weapon completely alien to modern battlefields.

Yeah. That's the major disadvantage of a sword. But if you manage to be clever, and ambush the enemy and get in range where you're a serious threat, you can be very effective.

In the end, it all comes down to luck, and a bow would be a superior weapon. Plus, string won't make a loud report upon firing, unlike a rifle. Also, no muzzle flashes. Your exact position is harder to pinpoint, unless they see your next shot.

Not really, Krav Maga and Sambo are both military fighting styles that where made for a battlefield. Both are full of tactics that can be directly applied to situations that you are, unfortunately, likely encounter on the streets. As good as you might be at something like Muay Thai or Kung Fu for example, both leave you ill-equipped to deal with an attacker with a knife, gun or multiple attackers. Also both are based around incapacitating or out right killing an attacker as quickly and effectively as possible.

Also both are based around incapacitating or out right killing an attacker as quickly and effectively as possible.

Krav Maga has a number of McDojos though, so one should always check the credentials of anyone teaching it.

Sambo is more grappling based a la Judo but has more of an emphasis on debilitation an enemy or opponent's legs.
As there are Sambo or affiliated Judo associations, McDojos are less of an issue with it.

In truth though, spatial awareness and a cool head are enough to see anyone through most fights unless you're coming up against someone skilled.

My usual recommendation for anyone thinking of taking up some form of martial arts is boxing.
There are legit gyms everywhere, so less chance of running into a McDojo.
More importantly, it's simple to learn but difficult to master.
I'd go so far as to say impossible in fact but that's true of martial arts in general.
