...I only use my laptop for fun stuff like DAI: and media, so I never ever considered backing up anything.

Hence why I need to go buy that flash drive, because I can't afford an external drive right now.

I don't recall paying a lot for my external drive. I am sure it was less than $100. Peace of mind.

I've got so much life I keep around. You know, stories I've written (even if I kind of want to forget about them most of the time), pictures taken, screenshots from obscure stuff I enjoyed, notes on everything, recipes, including old family recipes...

Does any of it mean anything really? I'm sure the world would go on just fine without the last few years of my stuff, but I really don't want to find out

That's what I do. It really came in handy the day Electricity Guy turned off my power during a Windows update and yeah, that was a complete reinstall.

Oh man I would have been livid!!

I've got a novel I've been writing which is almost finished but I keep that backed-up not just on the external but in another location too so I can retrieve it from more places than one. I already had a hd failure in the middle of working on it and it was a live saver that I had it saved elsewhere or else I would have been looking at writing well over 100 pages again and I might have just bagged it!

Like (just one example) pictures of my cat who was my friend in a horrible time my in life, who died a couple of years ago and I was there at the vet's when he died, and I still have pictures of him. I really, really don't want to lose those pictures.

Yeah, I really want to keep regular backups. Even if those files mean nothing to anyone else.

You're in America, love.

It's closer to $200 here instead of $50 for a 64 GB flash drive.

I hear you. I lost some things that were personal last failure and I never got them back. I didn't have an external drive though. I made sure I made getting one a priority when I got a new computer.

So many times computers act like they're fine until you try to do something important and they pull the rug out from under you.

Ha, oh yes.

"How you doing computer?"

"I've got this- FATAL ERROR!"

See I don't have that.

I have books on my kobo, my DA:I files, about 50-60 movies, my music, and that's about it.

And as long as I have the program syncios I can recover music from any ipod/phone I own.

So with the cloud, all I'd lose are my movies and programs.

I feel your pain Dazzle. The feeling you get when you get home and turn on your pc just to find it not quite working....Like someone reaching inside you and giving your heart a good squeeze >.< Too many of those for me over the years.

I don't... trust the cloud. Not that I really trust a personal computer either but... boundaries.

I know places offer "we'll back up YOUR ENTIRE COMPUTER to a facility somewhere that's perfectly safe!" but... boundaries.

Take a look at Newegg Dazzle. I see some 500gb ones for well under $100 (can you do $50 or $60?). If you don't store a lot of stuff then 500gb is reasonable.

Yeah Norton is always offering a back-up and I would trust them it's just...yeah the 'cloud."

I trust the cloud with my DA:I saves, but nothing else.

Like I would never do my banking on the cloud, you know?

Maybe next month. For now the flash drive will be fine for my purposes and I'll save up. :)

Yeah pretty much. Origin/Steam saves are up there, and game screenshots that I'm sharing. Everything else? Nope.

I don't need nobody poking into my personal business :P

Oh! One good thing about this whole refresh business: if I take it in to tech support, I won't have anything ...suspect in my history for them to giggle over :P

My backup drive is a wee USB thingie about the size of an iphone with a short cable, only 500 GB. Seems like it was $60 or something, but I could be remembering wrong.
