That's very true. There were variations across the regions I visited but it was all uniformly outstanding and not uncommon for a very big meal to be very cheap too. I still salivate over the memory of a tortellini con gorgonzola that I had in a Trat in Firenze. I can sense it's smell and texture and just how delicious it was a few decades later.
But what I really miss is the walking. It's not as fun in North America. "Oh a strip mall...wow...oh hey look a McDonalds...neat" as opposed to "I think that building facade might be Bernini or Michelangelo but regardless it's pretty cool!"
The beauties of North America are in the wild. We have so much space!
