I'm drinking coffee, waking up, trying to get rid of a headache, doing laundry, putting off cleaning the kitchen, thinking about diving into DAI and forgetting about everything else for a while.

Had a nice long talk with Morrigan today
Being a mother has been good for her
And lovely to hear her talking about my Mr Warden that way too.

Listening to Leliana talk about the Warden, then listening to Hawke talk about Isabella a few hours later, was strangely like listening to lovers in two incarnations talk about things I've experienced (kind of reversed since I was actually Hawke, rebirth is apparently complicated).
Apparently I'm loved in multiple lives... which is a comforting thought.

And Sera had a complete freak out (which I believe has been mentioned) but I was able to remind her what she really wanted.

It'd be nice if Hawke and Varric's lines about Isabela didn't imply that she was friendmanced, though. The rivalmance is so much better.

Considering she goes back to her old life, wich directly contradicts the rivalry path, I would say the game just defaults her into friend.

Yeah, I know! I mean...I cared a lot about rivaling Izzy. The actual Dragon Age II game's plot arguably works better with a rivalmanced Izzy than with a friendmanced Izzy. But...ugh.

It's weird that they didn't put the friend/rival thing into keep/DAI, when it was such a big thing in DA2. Was their budget really so restricted? Hmmm...

Player-character resonance / dissonance does my head in even without multiple player characters around. It was cool seeing Hawke again though.

I always wanted to do that romance but never did.
The character development seems to be something that doesn't carry over. Leli goes hard regardless of DA:O, and I don't think anyone gets Keep choices to reflect any of the possible changes in their personality.

I dunno. We've talked about this in the Lels thread, but the way she acts in Origins isn't incompatible with her later appearance in Inquisition. The difference is that she's in charge of an organization rather than just on her own. A softened Leliana in Origins, put through the wringer for six years as a ladypope's spymaster, commanding the intelligence service of the Inquisition, would still be very believable as what she was.
Sure, there wasn't any way to distinguish a softened Origins Leliana from a hardened Origins Leliana in Inquisition, and that's a little sad, but I'm not sure how they would've implemented that reactivity without it feeling like a Garrus-in-ME2 thing.
But the thing about Leliana was that there's nothing in her Inquisition arc to contradict or confirm either hardening or softening her in Origins. It's very easy to headcanon either way. Izzy's activity in Inquisition, on the other hand, directly contradicts the rivalmance path.
I like a lot of things about the way that Inquisition handled Hawke. I especially liked how the Nightmare deliberately poked at the whole "you are useless and can't save anybody, your whole family is dead" thing for Diplo Hawke, which matches the way I roleplayed that Hawke perfectly. That really was her greatest fear. But, by necessity, a lot of things weren't going to fit well with every Hawke ("my Hawke wouldn't have said something like that!!!" yeah sure whatever) so the writers should've done whatever they could to minimize that happening and account for multiple paths taken. Ignoring the - to me very meaningful - rivalry relationships in most cases was...emotionally difficult for me.

I have come to the conclusion that Rel Fexive should be given the nickname Verbal, because Reflexive verbs, and also because you can think he's around in the thread...

Oh sure, but there's two problems for me.
First while I understand off camera character development is to an extent necessary, it isn't satisfying, so when it trumps on camera character development it feels... cheap(?) - I don't like it anyway.
The other is that while I don't mind player agency being constrainted, when lots of a set of choices snap back on to one path abruptly I feel like I can see the machinery behind the magic too clearly.
---
Much as I like Leliana I'm not sure why they keep bringing her back.
Ignoring the - to me very meaningful - rivalry relationships in most cases was...emotionally difficult for me.
I felt Hawke's relationships were handled weirdly in general. Lover and sibling are both wisked away from wherever by Hawke's more expendable friends to keep them out of harms way? That's implausible and belittling.

Seen Sera's 'journal' entry on the ball now, too
And now I have... I can consider myself sufficiently informed to write my second ficlet of the week. Probably tomorrow now. I have a birthday meal to go out to tonight.
Also, better images. That are romance-related scene spoilers, of course.
I have come to the conclusion that Rel Fexive should be given the nickname Verbal, because Reflexive verbs, and also because you can think he's around in the thread...
I'll accept that.

Danielle's got the win! Going to hear that now whenever I visit Sera. Or a mod could add that in as her tavern song! ![]()
