I guess I need to play Dark Souls to see for myself but I'll take your word for it. 

 

I get what you are saying about playing as a female. I prefer games that give me the option because I generally prefer playing as a female character.

If you play on pc, you can find the Prepare to Die edition (the title is an advice, lol) for dirt cheap on Steam during sales.

And yeah, the more I grow old the pickier I become when it comes to buy games: I have a looong list of requirements they have to meet before I dish out my money.

Dark Souls is also evil.

Never have I played a game so frustratingly addictive. And just plain frustrating.

Nah, it's less evil than it seems...you just need to accept that you will die. A lot. Once you do that, the frustration disappears.

Also, the game does tend to sort of help you: you can get an op sword that will last you the first few areas of the game before it gets outdated, and once it does you can find a new weapon, already imbued with an element (concidentally the one against which most enemies in the game are weak) that once maxed out can last you the whole game, and so on. You just need to look around carefully, and the game will help you.

Well, if Steam tells me "look! there's this game you wouldn't otherwise buy available for 2 bucks!", I can't say no...unless the game itself is truly loathsome to me_.

I'm PS4 but I still have my 360. I haven't been on gold for a while though and I kind off stopped playing anything multiplayer on it because my internet was so bad, long before my gold ran out.

Which sword is that?

Because I've found that I favour a pair of daggers, which are awesome right up until you get hit.

The (in)famous Drake Sword: you can get it by cutting off the tail of the Wyvern on the bridge, and it can be done safely with arrows from a distance when you are in a sort of passage under the bridge.
It is crap when compared to proper weapons, since it doesn't scale with any stat, the materials to upgrade are hard to come by and the damage gain when upgraded is laughable, and the moveset isn't excellent, but it outdamages anything you can find at low levels when your stats are not exactly high enough to benefit from any scaling.
It starts to stink damage-wise roughly when you get to Sen's Fortress, which is where you find a lightning spear that can be further upgraded.

(For Varric, maybe your whole group has a high crit %? That usually makes him quite powerful if you have unlocked I can't remember which passive in his Artificer tree.)
