*raises hand* I did, Cole is a fictional character so her depersonalizing him doesn't offend me at all

On a principle level, it should offend people because "it" is not an appropriate pronoun for a person (unless that person clearly states they wish to be referred to that way) - whether that person is fictional or not. Everything I've seen and read about Cole (note I haven't read any DA novels at this point) seems to imply that Cole identifies as male.

Anyway, I haven't said anything before, but I'm not convinced that the word "it" is a direct quote from Sera. I can see how people might read it that way, but I got the feeling that it was from the writer/dev, probably used in ignorance - because Cole is a spirit not a human, elf, or dwarf. I could definitely be wrong.

If that is Sera's word for him, then I hope the Inquisitor gets the opportunity to correct her. Sure, hate him all you like - but he's not an "it", he's not just a thing. (I mean, I'm pretty sure my inquisitor is not going to like him, but there is a line.)

Not sure if anyone made this input before. But I'm pretty sure she'll be a lot like Shiani from DA:O City Elf's origin.

I remember Shianni; she was outspoken, and unafraid to confront those she felt were threatening her people.

She'll be less serious than Shianni, I'm sure of that. But I bet there'll be similarities, yeah.

Sounds a lot like our friend here :)

Ye I think so too, its just I loved Shiani and its a shame she had so little scenes in the game. When I thought of Sera that way I just got excited to see her ingame.

Buffalo Bill murdered women and made a suit from their skin, and it didn't offend me. I disagree that I should be offended by characters acting in a way that suits their personality and established traits.

I like the thought of the Inquisitor staying completely silent while this goes on, letting Cass deal with the fallout while they just keep walking on

The more companions revealed, the higher my infatuation with lovely Sera.

Not saying the others suck, but my excitement for Sera is evidently on a whole other level by itself <3

I'm looking forward to everyone, and the recent Solas reveal has got me super excited.

But yes, I have to admit I have priorities that lie with another elf...

Hey, we might find out this week if they reveal the guy finally :P

And they have! I think she might playfully bug him about his introvertedness since she seems to be the opposite

Believe me, I am all in favor of respecting peoples pronouns...When those people are real, their lived experiences are real, and their potential hurt feelings are real. Cole is a fictional character, one with a complicated back story that involves a lot of violence, so I don't see being distrustful of him as completely illogical.

There's a bunch of stupid crap in fiction.

I'm a fan of urban fantasy. However, it's a genre dominated by female readers, writers, and main character yet sexual assault and other violations are often portrayed as romantic. Men are often unable to control their violent and predatory impulses, and this is passed off as their natural state and something easily forgiven.

Fictional works are not consequence-free; their omnipresence means that the representation of people they carry shape our minds. If all fictional works treats group A as worthless waste of living cells, then the genreral perception of group A will be very distasteful.

However that's not what we're talking about here, we're talking about a fictional character being allegedly offended by an other fictional character, and I don't see that it's the case here, nor do I see why it should be the case here.

What I was trying to say (and worded so badly mangled the wording) was that most of us would be offended by someone referring to a person as "it". It's a principle. Dehumanising a person is wrong.

So while I might not be offended by the fictional work it occurs in, I am offended by dehumanising another person. Does it make better sense now?

Perhaps we should probably ease up about talking about Cole.  I've noticed a lot of arguing about Sera's potential treatment of Cole.  For all we know, it could be as simple as giving him the cold shoulder.  Besides, BioWare has shown to do some pretty good character arcs for their companions in the past.   Sera's treatment of Cole at the beginning of the game shouldn't be taken as a reflection of her behavior as the game progresses.  Her attitude towards Cole could easily change to a more positive outlook.

For the sake of sanity, may we switch topics?   Here's some more fan art:

Sera could very well retain her attitude towards Cole for the whole game; I'd hardly hold it against her if it fits the theme behind her story arc. Not every character's story has to lead to them growing to be the "better" person the reader thinks they should be.

In any case, it's too soon to tell and it's only leading to a circular fight.

"He is fictional character" isn't something that can be affecting the view of another fictional character inhabiting the same universe, though (without breaking the 4th wall, but I don't think that is part of DAI) Thus "Sera is acting like ******* to another person" is quite correct when it comes to relationship between these two.

As for the attitudes of people outside of that universe towards that... by the same token Sera isn't a person, either, and so it would be ok not to respect pronouns etc with her (it?) as well? But suspect that'd create quite a **** storm and hurt feelings if it happened. There certainly was quite a bit of that when the looks of that fictional character were judged negatively, e.g.

exactly.this is what i've been saying. even though i love cassandra who is a human, i'm so excited to have the option for an f/f elf/elf romance ♥

It might not be my first or second Quizzy, but I am also planning on a Sera romance down the road.  It would be nice to romance her as an elf, for sure.

Whether or not Cole is a person is a matter of philosophical debate. An argument can be made that he is a thing pretending to be a person, or under the delusion of being a person.

That being said, I'm sure that, if Sera actually does refer to Cole as "it", in context, it'll be meant to be offensive towards Cole. Which is fine, from a writing/character stand point.
