I'm not sure that Buck Rogers was quite portal fantasy, as I don't recall there being a way back in sight. He was just cryo-frozen and woke up in the future. It must be close to 30 years since I watched an episode, though, so I could be mis-remembering. Basically, like its contemporary the original Battlestar Galactica, it was mostly cashing in on the popularity of Star Wars...

Oh, is the return option necessary for it to be portal fantasy? I always thought the going there was the thing :D  I guess people do want to return to our world for whatever reason...

Yeah I thought that the idea with portal fantasy is that there's some way back in the end of the adventure. Also: XKCD FTW. :)

Edit: Found the original. always fun to read the mouseover text in XKCD...

This just came up on my big random Spotify playlist. I don't think it will ever fail to give me the shivers...

And completely unrelated, I found this on youtube from the tavern bard herself:

That's great, but not so different to the original. I just listened to the version of "Enchanter" that she uploaded from the same session... Wowzer.

"Ok wait...I went through this portal thingy and found this wonderful magical land. I killed a dragon. I rescued a beautiful woman from the clutches of a evil necromancer. They crowned me King and afterwards the beautiful woman was waiting for me in my bed. Now they want me to go back to my night-shift job at Stop-N-Shop?! Are they insane?!"

Yeah but in the fantasy kingdom there's nowhere to charge my phone and the 4G reception is non-existent. Deal-breaker. ;)

Sure but instead of playing Dragon Age you now get to live it and be the hero! ;)

Actually I'd probably just run like the devil from the dragons, end up living in a shack and afraid of the black death, vampires, the old witch who lives in the wood and casually turns people into toads on a whim. Then there is the not so small matter of those bat-sh*t crazy Elves!

Yeah, but if fantasy-land life is so awesome, do you really want your phone to talk to the people you left behind in lames-ville? :P

Also, you could always go to Andalasia.

So... not that different from Our World...

If I had to choose between having wondrous magic power, or my phone...  I don't think the phone wins.

I thought you'd typo'd Andalusia for a moment. I was wondering what a trip to southern Spain, beautiful as it is, had to do with fantasy worlds...

I dunno... Depends on how good healing magic is compared with modern medicine. and can it compete with all the other modern tech? Basically I want a thorough breakdown of the benefits and drawbacks of this "magic realm" before I commit...

If the healing magic is good I think I could laugh and thumb my nose at the banks and creditors I have as I step through the portal.

"See ya suckas!"

Another thing I wonder... Do mages have to eat loads of food? I'd imagine all that channelling of magic burns quite a few calories. Is it mentioned anywhere in the lore?

I think becoming hero would involve getting over those things. Might come with a tendency to die young though.

I haven't heard of mages eating more, but I'm not sure what powers magic anyway, the Fade and Lyrium apparently. They haven't really figured out conservation of energy rules for magic which annoys me, but whatever.

However Grey Wardens do, there's an awkward/romantic conversation with Alistair about it.

Ah yes. Now that you mention it I remember that. During his tales of Grey Warden training...

Is there a similar conversation about biotics in ME?

There's also mention of The Warden eating a lot, though it might be part of the same conversation.

'Well it's a good thing she gets a lot of exercise.'

I don't remember one, but I pretty much played snipers in ME.

I thought I remembered something along those lines. Wiki says that biotics get more rations than normal soldiers:

The Alliance military, on the other hand, welcomes biotics with open arms and provides them with massive enlistment incentives. They are now frequently found in the front lines of many ground-based combat units. Because of the massive physical effort required to biologically generate dark energy, biotic soldiers are assigned a large daily calorie ration (4,500 kilocalories per day, compared with the standard soldier's allotment of 3,000) and provided with energy drinks to help them maintain their blood sugar and electrolyte levels. The electrical fields in their bodies mean they are also prone to small static discharges when they touch metal.

Take me to a fantasy land and cut me loose. There is no way I'd want to come back.  The Hyborian Age or Thedas would be fine.  Having contact with people back in the real world? Honestly, there are few people I'd want to keep in contact with and I have already lost contact with most of them.

:( You never saw Enchanted? Because the final scene when she goes to Andalasia her phone rings and she says "Wow, really good cell reception here!" And then tosses her phone over her shoulder.

I was being brilliant, Uncle, geeze. :P
