That plot has been heavily criticised

 

Last time I saw it criticised people were leaping to BioWare's defense saying it was taken out of context, and they have a totally great track record for women. Of course, that critic was famous.

 

and I'm pretty sure that at least one dev has admitted that it was misjudged. I doubt they'd return to it for Sera, especially considering that when she was in Denerim she was a kid, but yeah, maybe the artist made that leap...

 

BioWare seems to be making a conscious effort to have less casual rape plots, which is good, but as it stands that was our primer for the plight of urban elves.

Confession / self-indulgence: I actually got into a rather heated argument defending the City Elf origin as justified and okay on the old DA boards before release. Apparently I've changed.

I did indeed listen to all the banters with Sera, with all the companions, and she never says anything that even hints at the 'rape as backstory' trope. She never says anything about hating being touched by men either.

Ah yes well... That. I do think that Bioware are generally streets ahead of most devs on these issues. Doesn't mean that they are above criticism, though.

If you've taken on arguments, decided that they were justified and changed your opinion, then that's highly commendable IMO. I think that modern society values "sticking to one's principals" far too much.
