this periodization is silly

It makes enough sense to find out what is Loyal's preference in era... *shrug*

Other than that... I admit, Thirty Years War and Napoleon I. Bonaparte barely have much in common...

no I mean it's fairly clear that the 'long' eighteenth century (a peculiarly British historiographical construct, and those are always annoying because of how parochial British history is, but let that go) was the focus there, and there are broad similarities in the way militaries worked across that period although there are also some difficult historiographical problems with it

the theme isn't what was weird, it was the whole 'Breitenfeld and Marlborough are like fifty years apart at best' thing

Wait, long 18th? That is new to me. I have heard of the "long 19th" and "short 20th" (I think what the professor considers the long 19th begins in 1790 or so, and ends 1914, and the short 20th would then be 1914-1989 - the "long century" and "short century" are strange things, IMHO - but at least the 20th does make some sort of sense, with the beginning of the world war, and the end of the USSR/Cold War) but not that one.

Note: I remembered when the supposed "long 19th century" I mentioned began, according to the person (a professor at my college) - 1789, with the French revolution. And then it ended in 1914. Strange construct, as I said, but somewhat understandable...

long eighteenth century is British (English, really): 1688-1815 ("glorious revolution" to That Bloody Bastard Boney), sometimes 1660-1815, often referred to as the "Second Hundred Years War" as well

the British think they're special so they get to ignore the other periodizations and use their own unicorn ones

but it was just a throwaway reference, point is that the eighteenth century in Europe is lines of dudes with muskets banging away at each other at close range with basically zero accuracy and a lot of melee combat, and as much as my stupid postmodern ass likes to make fun of periodization in general there are enough broad similarities in practice across the era that it's not unreasonable to

aaaaaaaah **** it you get the idea

anyway reread the earlier posts the only thing I was being picky about was when he implied the Battle of Breitenfeld (1631 or 1642, there were two of them) was equivalent to the career of the duke of Marlborough (active commanding from 1680s, important from 1701)

that's all

didn't want it to become some big THING

seriously

Oh, I don't mind. I enjoy a history conversation.

As much as I'm not fond of school, I did choose History/English combo for a reason.

Plus, you know a lot of things. I can learn myself. Remember, I'm just the enthusiast, with just a hope of becoming a historian. There, I said it.

I'll not comment on British parochialism in history, except to say that I don't think that we're the only ones guilty of it by a long stretch, but I'm nothing like an expert...

I've had "Punch a bear" and "diamond-crusted hair-cutting whatevers" today. It's been a good day for Sera banter.

Well, anyone could punch a bear. The real question is who could do it without loosing an arm or becoming lunch?

Cass can punch a Dragon and walk away with loads of loot.

(Actually, my second Dragon kill in Crestwood ended up with Cass being the sole survivor, and punching the last two or three thousand HP out of the Dragon by herself. Felt pretty epic.)

Why didn't I start using the Winters Grasp and Long Shot combo earlier? Sera and Solas are tearing through pretty much everyone.

Also, reinstalling the game, deleting all saved games, reimporting from dragon keep and repairing the game three times seems to have cut down on the directx crashes somewhat.

Edited out. I missed a post from Eirene. That will teach me that I had better go back a page before responding.

I was intending to use some masterwork stuff to change the colour to something better but none of the ones I had at the time really worked for me.  Maybe I should go back one save and wait until I have something better.... hmm....

Turns out the save before the save after I made my white prowler armour was TWO HOURS of the Wastes earlier.  So not doing that again.  I'll just have to put up with the white until I get some FT varghest scales for that nice green leather look...

Anyway. That's boring.  Know what isn't EVER boring?

Got that right, yeah?

*comes up for air from the new ps4*

sooooo what've I missed? anything good? Looks like a war over history?

I know we have a lot of PC players out there...but did you all know that with a PS4 and a PS Vita I can actually play the PS4 THROUGH the PSVITA anywhere in my wifi range?

So like, I can have the tv shut off, and be in the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, wherever, with my PS Vita and STILL be playing my Inquisition Game on the PS4, displayed on the screen on the vita...

Not a separate controller, not a side game or only MP.  The full, real, actual freakin GAME!!!!!!!!!

Why didn't I start using the Winters Grasp and Long Shot combo earlier?

Winter's Grasp and Twin Fangs carried me through the pre Skyhold part of the game.

Another good one is Static Cage and Leaping Shot.
That combination made Varric my party's MVP against the Envy Demon.

haha that wasn't a slam and if you think it was then I apologize

I was mostly thinking of how the Battles of Breitenfeld and the career of John Churchill are kind of far apart, so using them as equivalent descriptors for the same endpoint is silly and weird

you'll note that the post was that the periodization was silly, not the choice

I missed this post before I wrote a whole bunch of angry responses. Sorry about that. My apologies also to the thread.

Clever!

....if small, with less impressive sound... but certainly better than pausing when getting a drink or whatever!

Can you attach a keyboard and mouse to your Vita? ;)

Seriously that's a cool use of tech, though.
