I think that's just the term for finger bones in general, but of course it just makes me think of;

Nope, the Joining makes it easier, because Wardens are essentially high-functioning ghouls without the mind control, and the Calling takes away the 'high-functioning' part and erodes the 'without the mind control' part. Gaider said that it's basically true, that he hadn't thought of it before, and that he supposed an alternative to the Calling would be to commit suicide. Lovely.

Oh, it was unintentional; darkspawn field massive armies because they capture random people (like Hespith, Laryn, or the human woman who became the Mother) and ghoulify them. The apparent stream of incoming Wardens is a bonus.

See, I always assumed that Grey Wardenification neutralised the potential for becoming a broodmother, otherwise the Wardens were bloody stupid.

Your teacher was an idiot then. A phalanx is a finger bone. Your little finger has three of them. Your teacher forced you to adopt inapproriate language! You should totally sue!

 

That reminds me of that guy at summer camp who was missing half of his pinky. It had been cut off at the knuckle in a freak accident. So he would walk up to people with his maimed finger under his nose to make it look like he had it shoved in his nostril.

 

I'm not sure which freaked people out more: the thought that he had his whole finger up his nose or the fact that he was missing half of that finger.

The whole fantasy turning women into baby factories aggravates me though. It's unnecessary, unrealistic*, and all kinds of icky without being responsible about it.

To continue on that point: women get turned into baby factories, but they don't need to be 'seeded' in any way? Most lifeforms require a male and female component.

 

If they wanted to make a scary monster, why not go all the way and have the Broodmother be the result of splicing a male and a female? Or heck, go the Harvester route and have the 'Spawners' be the result of mutating a bunch of people together to replicate genetic material.

I hadn't thought about. Given how radical the broodmother alterations are it's not really a stretch to say the same could be done to a man. Actually copy Alien's themes rather than just its Gieger aesthetic for a change.

Given it's a bit similar to the big nasty spider in the Fade I'd probably find myself saying the same thing before my pc that I did in the Fade scene: "Please don't make it so I have to fight that...please don't make it so I have to fight that...oh Stroud gets to fight that? PHEW!!!!"

I don't think it's that far-fetched for broodmothers to do that without being 'seeded'. Who knows what the taint and darkspawn magic can do
