I truly think it's because of people bingewatching shows on netflix now. 

 

People get exhausted of hearing the same tune over and over in a day, so to keep the audience invested and not annoyed they've cut it to a title?

That doesn't explain why PPV networks still have them. I think it's because the free to air people want more space for ads...

Dexter had proper opening credits with a theme tune, because it was from Showtime not one of the free to air channels. Also I love that theme and the video montage that goes with it.
