Using magic that involves spirits is simply one example of Clan Virnehn violating tradition. "Unlike other spellcasters, Dalish mages do not use any magic involving spirits, as they believe all spirits are dangerous." (page 104 of WoT)

Zathrian acted without the knowledge of the rest of his clan, and Marethari released a spirit that had been summoned and trapped during the war with Arlathan. Your line of reasoning is no different than if I argued that it isn't atypical that templars are rapists because Karras and Alrik engaged in such behavior.

To me that argument paints Thelhen in a better light than Zathrian. Zathrian deceived his clan and violated tradition to satisfy personal vengeance. Thelhen was honest with his clan about what they were doing and the risks involved, and acted in line with the ideals of the dalish people; to reclaim a piece of their lost history. Arguably, the most important piece that exists.

Also true, but the dalish by and large don't seem to acknowledge, believe, or accept this.

One of the historians of the Dalish wrote that they want the city elves to be part of an independent elven kingdom, and even storytellers like Paivel talk about how they want their city brethren to join them, and even how they can both teach each other things. You seem to continually make statements about the Dalish that are divorced from what we actually know.

And I think that's part of the point; that the dalish don't offer any sort of real future for their people beyond just wandering around in wagons pulled by deer.

The Dalish way of life is a matter of survival, which is made abundantly clear in their lore and the experiences of the protagonist. Briala's ambitions to help the elves includes an interest in having both city elves and Dalish involved, so I don't think unification between the two is out of the question.

Whether Sera has any personal interest in this remains to be seen, although I think it is a strong possibility considering how she seems invested in the disenfranchised (especially given what happened to the elves of Halamshiral).

This is my main problem with the Dailish.

It's like in DAO Awakening when you Give Velanna that blank journal and she scoffs at it like it's useless, and then you bring up that she can use it to write down her peoples stories for future generations and she is like "Wow, what an amazing idea." Yeah, you think? How about a little more foresight please, lol.

Your example is someone who was exiled from her clan because the Keeper - as well as the majority of the men and women who comprised it - disagreed with her views? Okay, then...

Another thing about TME that lead me to this conclusion is Felassan, who didn't have a single positive thing to say about the dalish throughout the book. A large part of his role was de-mystifying the dalish and the ancient elves.

If it's the Dalish that Bioware wants to turn into DA's Cerberus, they should just say so and be done with it.

I don't think they're trying to go that far.

But I think a lot of the fans have a very idealized view of the dalish and that Bioware is trying to show that they're every bit as flawed as every other society in Thedas.

Really? Because it seems to me they're trying to show the Dalish as being titanically more flawed than every other society in Thedas.

Of course they are, and that is a good thing.

Well, they aren't having them cut out people's tongues and sew their mouths shut.

But are being shown constantly killing themselves off via demons.

Also, when the Dalish are being shat on for their quest for understanding while the human intent to spread the Chant of Light everywhere gets a free pass, it certainly doesn't look equal from where I stand.

I think you're wrong. There are a plethora of players who despise the Dalish because some of their members are abrasive towards outsiders. We've also met Dalish who have been in the wrong since Origins. There is no idealized view; there's the simple reality that some of us don't vilify the entirety of the Dalish for the actions of a few.

Progress and understanding can uncover some dangerous things, while a conservative approach that is already fully understood has almost no unknown danger to it.

Besides, I think that the Red Templars fit the role of DA:I's Cerberus perfectly already.

Also, I hitherto decree that while I'll continue discussions about the Dalish, it won't be in this thread. If you, Fiend, wish to continue, I recommend you start a new thread about why the Dalish are really evil.

I find it quite slanted, especially when quite a bit of explanation that would provide different sides to the Dalish are relegated to codex entries and a book that not everyone has purchased. The predominant human perspectives in Dragon Age are part of the reason why I'm hoping Sera can provide an elven point of view. I'm sure she didn't have an easy life growing up.

You may well be right.

I actually have a similar(albeit, less vocal) stance regarding the Qun; where, in my mind, I have a realistic view of it that acknowledges it's flaws and virtues. I know several people on the BSN think my view of the Qun is idealistic.

For what it's worth, I don't despise the dalish. I think they're as flawed and broken and backwards as every other society in Thedas and I like them for that reason.

Sera. She's an extrovert. All my previous LIs have been introverts (Leliana is arguable, but I was sort of more attracted to yet couldn't have Morrigan). I'm somewhat unsure of our compatibility on this level...

I would say Leliana is an extrovert.

I'm happy b/c I was going to go for an introvert Inquisitor and I like extrovert/introvert pairs.

They can go together... but Sera seems like the kind of person who'd approach quiet people at parties and try to get them to have a good time, and I hate that.

Depends what she has in mind...

I don't know if she'll be like that.  I'm not sure how that would manifest in game...you (the Inquisitor) can ignore her and never talk to her.  I don't think she'll be constantly bursting into your room bugging you to do something with her.

Oh, I'm sure the literal action wouldn't be taken, it's just a similar vibe that I got. Certainly I doubt there'd be much difficulty in choosing to romance her if Vivienne isn't available.

Though it makes me wonder if their relationship would contain its own share of sexual tension.

I don't know...they apparently don't talk much to each other.

It would be an icy tension.

Well, Vivienne being too mean to Sera or Cole or anyone would likely destroy any attraction I have for her, so it might all work out in the end.
