Oh, Morrigan? Yes. She is the Witch of the Wilds.

And she is perhaps dabbling in Blood Magic...

Even if you do not make her a Blood Mage...

Necromancy > Blood Magic. Sure Blood Magic can grant you a lot of power. But, Necromany goes far beyond the limitations of Blood Magic.  A Blood Mage can become a flesh golem. But a Necromancer can become a Litch and in doing so gain a direct connection to death itself.

It depends on who's doing it. Morrigan, Grace and Idunna made it look hot. But if someone like Oghren used it. It wouldn't be that attractive. lol

Idunna the Exotic Wonder, not so sure.

Grace, who the heck is she, even? One of the more or less random characters?

Morrigan, though... Prime example.

Also, Merrill. Taunting people in Elven...

Can't quite remember another Blood Mage I liked...

Grace was one of the mages you could save from the Templars, she is the one with the sexy face tattoo or face paint. lol

If you want hot Blood Mages, you certainly do not mention centuries-old dudes locked away in ancient Warden fortresses, Monkey :P

Actually, I think Morrigan and Merrill may be the only two female Blood Mages anyhow important to the plot...

Every other Blood Mage is either a man... or unimportant.

Linguistics point: Necromancy as a means of manipulating the dead and expanding life is a misnomer. It comes from the Greek 'manteia' which means 'divination'. Necromancy is the art of speaking to the dead.

The proper term would be 'necroturgy' or 'death work' or 'working with death'.

*removes pince-nez*

Thank you. Class dismissed.

strangely Dorian actually references this etymology in a banter with Sera (holy s**t on topic) when he mentions thaumaturgy and even correctly describes it as the creation of 'helpful wonders'

'Thaumaturgy' is a fairly common term in D&D lore, so it's not all that surprising that he would mention it, being from a culture with a strong magical tradition. If his spec had actually been called 'necroturgy' now that would have been surprising.

The 'all magic is for combat' thing makes me sad because it offers so many possibilities. I was pleasantly surprised to see it used to fix bridges, seal tunnels, etc. in this game. Still, few games go into detail with magic beyond 'point and stuff happens'.

The King's Quest series had two instances of hermetic magic (entries 3 and 6 in the series), and it was great! It had spell crafting as opposed to just casting. You had to gather your components then cast a spell over it. In the third game it had to be done in the right order too or the spell would mess up. Lots of fun!

So long as you know what I'm talking about it does not matter and if you try to school me again. You won't get any cat nip for a week and I'll bring back that cat servant you really hated. You know, the one that you clawed because he put your food in a dirty dish.

Never did D&D, but I'm aware of thaumaturgy from religious sources; one of my friends has published extensively on magic and religion in East Africa, and Orthodox church history has always been a side interest of mine.

I feel like the way magic works in Dragon Age wouldn't lend itself well to a crafting system, but I do like that it's not solely used for battle purposes in Inquisition and I'd like to see more of that going forward.

it was a joke, hence the last two lines. Also, the only reason I used the term Necromancy because it's the term most used in fantasy lore. I'm well aware of the origin of the term

Holy on-topicness, Batman!

I know, bad joke.

Still, I didn't actually know that. Learn new stuff every day, right?
