I'm not saying she doesn't care...she just didn't try to help them.

I'm just trying to get an idea what people mean when they want a companion who cares about and tries to help 'the elves' b/c I think that could mean many different things.  Then there are questions like, 'what does it mean to be an elf?'

Merrill and Briala had different opinions on how to help.  They almost seem to be on opposite ends of a spectrum.  Merrill representing the Dalish ideal of the 'true elf' that needs to find their past in order to move forward.  Briala wants the elves to gain more political power and freedoms in the future.  Briala is using eluvians to achieve this, funny enough, but it's a means to and end.  With Merrill, the evluvian was the end.

They need each other.

I think something similar was voiced way back in the Dalish origin with Hahren Paivel. That the Dalish needed the City Elves (especially to reconcile or understand humans), but that the Dalish can introduce CE to lost lore as well.

Merrill thinks the Eluvian can help all the elves, which is why she is focused on building one. Her friendships and her familiarity with elves in the Alienage does show that she cares, and that she is cognizant about their situation. Merrill even comments to Fenris that the plight of the elves in the Alienage is something that matters. Unfortunately, we didn't really get much of an insight into life in the Kirkwall Alienage (as opposed to the Denerim Alienage), which is likely one of the reasons why some people are hoping this isn't the case in Inquisition, particularly with the inclusion of Sera, an elven companion.

Merrill and Briala both intend to use the Eluvians to help the elves, albeit in different ways. Merrill is building one from a single shard, so the main focus that the player sees is her painstaking efforts to successfully build one, while Briala is using existing ones that were built over a millennia ago and can take the next step as a result; they are walking two completely different paths, but both women had the same intention to use elven technology to benefit the Elvhen. As Merrill can't take the next step because her Eluvian remains inert, we never find out what her plans are, while we know that Briala intends to establish a pan-elven movement to help all the elves during the Orlesian civil war.

I don't think it has to be an either or.  I guess I should say 'prioritize' moving forward.

That would be extremely difficult when their religion is outlawed and their culture is prohibited, unless emancipating the Dales from Orlesian rule becomes a possibility in Inquisition. The clans seem to prioritize survival, first and foremost.

I would like the choice.

I'm not sure Sera would approve of what Briala is doing.  Briala is attempting to draw out the Orlesian Civil War as long as possible for some 'greater good' which will, ofc, result in more deaths for the poor and disenfranchised.   This is the thing we know Sera doesn't like.

I would like the choice as well. I honestly have more interest in aligning with Briala for the betterment of all the elves than with either one of the Orlesian contenders for the throne.

Perhaps you're right; Sera may disagree, although I hope I could argue to her that helping restore the status quo would lead to more suffering and purges for elves in the long run.

Here's some more Sera related stuff from the Q&A

Cliff08Jul 5 2014 at 3:26pm

Will there be a good amount of side missions? Will organizations like the Blackstone Irregulars, Friends of Red Jenny, The Mages' Collective, and The Chantry Board quests make a return? Or at least something similar?

Yeah, there's a goodly dose of side missions, though we've tried to contextualize most of them to make sense as something the Inquisition would do to either win the hearts of people or otherwise grow the Inquisition's power. --Laidlaw

Oh, and Red Jenny. There will be some Red Jenny. Because I've wanted to answer "who ARE they?" for a while now. --Laidlaw

I don't disagree...that's the bridge that needs building, so to speak.

Briala needs to meet Merrill. Heh..

Definitely no bridge building with the clan in TME though.

It's something the Dalish Inquisitor could spearhead.  With Briala perhaps?

I'm still not sure how involved Sera would want to be.  Her writer interview didn't touch on her opinion about 'the elves' at all.   I assume it's b/c this is not a huge priority for her but it also might be something spoilery about her character.

Because you keep commenting that you just want them (or Sera if Solas is not the caring type) to care about "poor people in general," not elves. And again, to me, that kind of defeats the purpose of having an elf companion. If they just don't connect with elves, feel particularly moved by or have a perspective from the elven plight, you could literally reskin her as humans and lose nothing. A human character can also just care about "the general concern of poor people" and not elves because they feel no personal connection to them.

Not culturally elven, doesn't have elven experiences, elven perspectives, feel any sort of kinship with the elven community even though every other city elf companion we've had so far had that same shtick (Zevran's past is Crow-related, not elf related; Fenris' is Tevinter slave-related, not elf-related) just makes me wonder what's the point in having them other than the elven aesthetic?

...I literally said I'm 'fine' with them caring about poors in general, not that I don't want then to care about the elven plight. Being 'fine' with it doesn't mean I want all the elves (or Solas and Sera, either way) to be like this. I'd like to have an elf that cares about the elven plight specifically, but I'm fine of they don't.
If I gave this impression, it wasn't my intention.

I don't know what to think about PC characters. I've come to think that big movements in the plot happen better via a book character. Like Briala. She's accomplished more than any elf Warden, Velanna, or Merrill combined. Simply because the idea of choice doesn't factor in her story. If they want to move things forward, it has to be done this way.

Orlesian bard meets Dalish with dry humor? That would be interesting, to say the least.

Definitely no bridge building with the clan in TME though.

I don't even see other clans building bridges with Clan Virnehn.

If Briala has a network set up by the time the protagonist becomes the Inquisitor, perhaps Sera has heard about the city elves and the Dalish working together in Orlesian territory...

This is the reason I get very confused when people wonder if Sera and Briala are the same person.  Not only do they look completely different but (from what little we know of Sera) their methods are very different.  The only thing they have in common is they're both elves who like other ladies (I don't even want to say they're both lesbians since there's nothing to say that Briala doesn't also like men.)

Briala is not only described as dark haired, but dark skinned. If it was just a hair change, I could've bought into the idea that Sera was a disguise, but no.

Can I ask why?  Briala prolonged a war to help the elves, Sera is against doing things 'for the greater good'.  I get the feeling letting thousands of humans and elves die in order to get a better future is one of those 'greater good' things.

I just think they would have designed her that way in game if it was true. Her dark skin was something she was actually self-conscious of.

Never mind, I think I misread your earlier comment.  I thought you were saying your agreed that Sera and Briala could be the same woman.  Sorry!

You brought up healing again. You're making the mistake of playing the game one way, and then thinking everyone picks the same dialogue path.

No, I mentioned healing because that's what happens no matter the path -- initially Jack is said to have a lot of psychological issues as result of the conditioning she's been put through and all other things she's experienced. By the end of ME2 these are pretty much swept under the rug and never mentioned again. In ME3 if you run into her she explicitly says she's changed because of Shepard.

And really, the way *i* played the game has nothing to do with it. My personal Shepard was a woman for one thing, and she used more neutral and renegade dialogue options than paragon ones. (most of them neutral until 3rd game where they axed that option. THANKS BIOWARE ._.

(you're right this is quite offtopic tho. Sorry about it, I'm going to drop it as well from now on)

Q: Was Sera dead in the demo when that demon tossed her aside?
A: She certainly wasn't having a good day. (ML)

So for those still wondering about that scene, it seems we have semi(very semi) confirmation that she didn't die when the demons broke in. After the ensuing fight, I imagine her just getting up, holding her head and saying something like, "So...how many did I kill?"

What do we know about Bioware games? If certain choices are made or if certain quests are not done party members can die. Also I don't know if this has been posted yet since I don't feel like going through the thread to see but Cassandra has been confirmed as a male only romance and Scribbles now has a name, Josephine and she ia a romance for both male and female.

That hasn't been posted in this thread, but I think most around here are aware of both :P
