Then it becomes "character development". Which is only allowed to happen to NPCs. Same with any sort of imperative or demand, really. For a lot of RPG players, the story is something that happens to other people.

now...this is not to suggest i side one way or the other about her but experience is the best teacher and i'm not going to negate anyone's experience with Sera. The only thing that i can say is there are a lot of Sera's IRL...meaning you simply won't be compatible with everyone you meet and there are people with her issues too(which i do see. I'm not the person that blindly capes for a character). i get how this is problematic in game but not to the point that i will beat a dead horse.

I pretty much agree with this. I have slightly stronger opinions on why I think Sera isn't "problematic", and why I think that complaints about her character as intrinsically offensive go much too far. But I've stated them elsewhere, and they're not going to convince people who've already made up their minds, like you say.

I pretty much agree with this. I have slightly stronger opinions on why I think Sera isn't "problematic", and why I think that complaints about her character as intrinsically offensive go much too far. But I've stated them elsewhere, and they're not going to convince people who've already made up their minds, like you say.

Seriously ? I never seen anything like that...the only Bug I had was with a door...and one in the cantina (Omg now that one was Horrible!!!)..where that Pazaak quest related guy wont Spawn!! I could see his Name..but ya cant see him....and no matter how much I reloaded he wont respawn at all .

I do have to say, my Lavellan mage never pushed her elf views on Sera and respected Sera, and Sera still flipped out and left the Inquisition after she drank from the well because she wouldn't renounce her beliefs.  So, depending on how you play, its not always others pushing things onto Sera, sometimes Sera does judge others who don't fit her worldview.

 

 

But guess what, people are like that.  Sometimes people have a hard time dealing with things that challenge their beliefs.  It makes her a realistic character.  Not everyone has to like her, and not everyone has to dislike her.  

 

But  you can't say she's a terrible character just because of who she is.  Vivienne can be just as narrow minded, she just is more 'diplomatic' about it, although very snarky at times too.  Depending on how you play, a lot of the characters can be closed minded and confrontational.

 

Sera and Vivienne do seem, to me, to have the most narrow judgmental views of the group, but again, that doesn't make them bad characters.  It makes them people, just the like the rest of us.

Tsk cheating at pazaak , how could ya ! the game is easy lol No...not cheating . I mean the guy who ya play Pazaak with  on Onderon is related to the main Quest . If he doesnt show up...ya are forever stuck there....in that cantina .

I think that you hit the nail on the head here. People are like that in real life. Whether people want to admit it or not people will turn others away or down who do not fit their beliefs. You can argue the merits of Sera's world-view from any angle but she's a very realistic character in that regard. I've said it before, elsewhere, but I appreciate that BioWare made an rpg with characters who are capable of being noble, ignoble, kind, not-so-kind and it's going to keep me coming back to them. I appreciate the depth to these characters and it's a testimony to how much depth they were given that we're even arguing about them in the first place.

For a lot of RPG players, the story is something that happens to other people.

 

Heh. Funny thing how mechanically an RPG is all about character progression, yet narratively their main characters are usually completely static.

 

Honourable mentions to KotOR 2 and Torment, but they put their character's pivotal moments before the game begins, which is sort of cheating.

I had to headcanon that one a bit and think of how I might react, myself, in real-life. I decided to tell Sera that I didn't believe any of it while secretly my elf did because my elf loved her and knew she was frightened, acting out of fear, and needed comfort more than anything else in that moment. I even imagined telling Dorian that I'd lied to her and why and to keep my secret and Dorian swearing to do so. Sometimes we don't tell loved ones the truth. Not because we're rat-bastards but because we wish to spare them hurt or terror. I looked on it as a noble lie on my elf's part.

I was a proud Elf Mage, so while I never told Sera she had to be elfy, at other times I definitely picked pro-dalish dialogue options, and when I drank from the well I held to my beliefs in the Dalish gods. I'd also denounced being Andraste's anything anytime I was given the option and was basically anti-maker and chantry.  None of this was directed at Sera, but those choices of course affected her approval rating with me.

 

I probably only had a mid level approval with her at best, and being Dalish Mage, I think it was all just too much for her to accept without me renouncing my beliefs, so she stuck the arrow in my face, dropped it when I proved I was still me, but then when I didn't reounce the Dalish gods in the next dialogue options, she basically got pissed off and stormed out.  I don't remember the exact order or choices, but that was more or less it.

 

But I get it.  Everything about me was a challenge to her beliefs, and I had not completed her side plot yet, so from her view, I was starting to look like a Dalish version of the Nobles, and then you add on top of that I am now, to her view, basically possessed or something close enough to it?

 

Maybe if I had a higher approval rating and had finished her side quest I would have more options to talk her through it..I don't know.  But the scene made sense to me at least, for her.  

 

I restarted my Qunari Rogue playthrough on the PS4 now and he and Sera are going to have some good times so I'm interested to see what kind of options I get this time around, as I should be able to have a really high approval rating...
