I used the word "d*ck" without the asterisk.
Also, I don't know... maybe I'm officially on their radar.

I think it also points up how "character development" is not the be-all, end-all of a narrative, and why automatically expecting it from characters in order to have a "good" arc is ridiculous. The friendship and rivalry arcs from DA2 are instructive here.
Hmm. I suppose what I really don't like is the feeling of using a clumsy vehicle who interacts with the world and story to advance it, it's like playing Citizen Kane. RPGs main characters are often borderline not characters, which could be addressed without making them the focus of character development.
Though I do think RPG systems are ripe for main character development. Using mechanics to support narrative is where things start getting really interesting.

Friendship and Rivalry was a good idea that they should have kept pushing. Needed to track them on separate bars but it was far more engaging than any other companion mechanic.
"Perfect Lesbian of Thedas"
Quick, someone make a fanart of this.

You are a true rogue, my friend.
by dnd standards.. im rogue-wizard lolYou are a true rogue, my friend.
Bolding is important to me.
Like, really really heartbreakingly important to me.
With most games, I don't come up with prior expectations about ships and character arcs and all that. I try to remain neutral about them, and I usually avoid disappointment. But the Cassandra thing was huge. I remember her thread immediately after she was announced as a romance option along with Cullen, and how it was full to bursting with other women. I remember how we didn't initially know that not all romances would be bisexual, and then after they made the 2-2-2 plus announcement we still tried to rationalize Cassandra being bi or lesbian. ("Maybe Vivienne will be the straight woman!" Yeah, okay, Past Eirene.) So then they came out with The Chart and Cass was straight, which sucked, and then I played through the game, found I could flirt with her anyway, and got that crushing rejection scene after "Promise of Destruction", and that sucked more.
Right now, after three months and a couple of PTs, I really like the game. It's technically superior to DA:O and DA2 in basically every way, the writing is better and tighter, and the characters are a lot of fun. I adore Buttercup and Ruffles. But, y'know, my enduring takeaway is going to be remembering how, once again, the character I was most interested in as a lesbian romance in a BioWare game ended up being straight. That hits a bit too close to home for me. It reminds me of Bastila, and Miranda, and Jaesa, and Morrigan, and Risha. It reminds me of how other women fawned over Liara, the Great Blue Hope of queer representation, while all I could think about was how wooden and creepy she was, and how her character made no sense to me, and how I couldn't stand her voice, and how her attempt at intimacy made my skin crawl.
...f**k. I said I wasn't going to talk about this, and I am, because I'm an idiot, and I told myself I wasn't going to get teary, but I am, because I'm a sap.
I'm sorry. This is more about me than it is about you. That's wrong of me. But I know where you're coming from, and I know it does suck, and I know it can sap enjoyment of the game. I completely agree with you about many of those things.
But I don't see this as a problem with the game, or the game's writing. We have representation. The writers aren't under an obligation to make that representation the specific sort of fictional character that we personally want to see. There's no way to do that. Sera as she is loses the hardcore Dalish fanbase, but Sera as, say, another Merrill would lose a different one, for equally valid reasons. That's how characters are. Not every character is for everybody.
I'm not trying to tell you you shouldn't be sad or discouraged. You've got good reasons for doing so. It's not selfish to think that way. But it's not the game's fault, or the writers' fault, or Sera's fault, or your fault.
I rarely do this when I've little of substance to add, but I just wanted to quote this post because it is awesome.

I don't put people on ignore. Sometimes, I really want too. However, sometimes those people do post something that I agree with. Also, everyone has the right to post an opinion, no matter how misguided it might be.

Everyone has a right to post an opinion, sure. But they are absolutely not entitled to have my eyes reading that opinion.
I haven't blocked anyone on bsn (however it's done, I haven't tried), probably because I almost never step outside this thread. But if I did do it, I'd feel not a shred of remorse.

I get that but those same people do post things I want to read. Sometimes enjoy reading. Just my opinion though. I don't want you to feel like I am saying you are wrong or anything.
But there is no answer...in the end ?
There is no answer. One of the few pithy one-liners that I believe to be true is that you can't please all the people all the time. Whatever lesbian character BioWare made, there'd be some lesbians who didn't like her. What Eirene said was what I was thinking, but I'm not a lesbian, and I don't like to be seen to be attempting to speak for others. Eirene is, so I am happy that she said this.
