I saw a beautiful musket from that era. It had a stock that curved down then up so it rested in the armpit. It was made to fire from horseback.

 

Oh their cavalry carbines from that era are really gorgeous.

I'd prefer a hand axe over a sword. Mostly because they are effective on the battlefield, do not require as much maintenance as a sword and are a very useful tool to have when you are not fighting. 

 

I too, enjoy an axe.

I have to admit, blood makes for some interesting looking art. My friend once used his own blood for a piece... I never asked how or why.
