My point - so far as there was one - is that a flight sim has more aggressive ammunition consumption than pretty much any other type game I'm aware of. ME generally lets you make several reliable kills, per weapon, and each kill drops more supplies for you to use (or there's a crate somewhere).
Good point. Scarcely there is a harder place to manage your ammunition than an aircraft.
Tanks, turn around, good bye, we're gonna rearm, be right back.
Infantry, "Oh look, that guy I just killed two meters away from me has an assault rifle with loads of ammunition. I'll just use that until I can find resupply for my own."
Aircraft? "Well, that's just great. I'm out, and the nearest base is half hour far at full speed. FML."
The Americans nailed it, though. The Fifty has a good-enough effect on target (or, in the case of Zeke's, "IMPOSSIBRU, I AM FARRING APARRT!" after a short burst) - by that I mean, getting hit by a Fifty is an unpleasant thing to happen, no matter how much armor you have. Also, rate of fire is among the best of the 20mm guns, if not faster. Then we have the ammunition reserves. Each gun could normally carry over two hundred rounds (F6F, 400 rounds/gun; P-51, 400 outer guns, 270 inner guns, per gun) making it the ultimate thing in terms of amount of sustained firepower.

I have a memory of Darkspawn near the Abyss (what's that place called?) dropping some. Don't know, maybe a lot of spawn pillaged Highever?

Okay, my knowledge on this is all badly sourced and I'm no expert but I don't think that's right. The 0.5 calibre is 12.7mm not 20mm, Spits, 109s, 190s and Yaks all flew with 20mms (though Yaks only had one because their aces only needed one).

Yeah... It does seem like they raided a Cousland-owned warehouse or something...
It's the Western Approach.

And some people thought paying for Nessa's family to go to Highever was the safest option.

Yes. And the 20mm are .79, as I recall. Point is, it is still remarkably comparable, as long as we forego high explosive round presence in the belt. The .50's (yes, I realize that, in fact, translates into "half an inch") strength was in it's ability to penetrate as many times as possible, and partially in the fact that API-T rounds were, as I recall, rather effective in both penetration and setting things on fire.
Also, ShVAK cannons, uh...
I'd rather a Hispano, or an MG 151, any day.
Edit: I also seem to remember that the ShVAK was already being outphased by different cannons (B-20s? Don't quote me on it. The B-20 is developed from the UB heavy MG, which itself is 12.7mm.) during 1944-45. Also, there were numerous attempts of mounting SEVERAL 20mm guns - EVEN on the Jakolev. Ever heard of Jak-3P?
I'll launch War Thunder and crosscheck the armament with reliable sites with such information, and get back to you.
I swear, WT's just a quick way to find out which versions may have had different armament.
Oh, and also, the armament was always ShVAK and UB.

And I checked it. All Yaks have armament roughly comparable with that of the 109's without Rüstsatze pods under the wings.

Doh! I should have mentioned this to you last night! I got some of that in Valamaar and crafted something for Bull that gave him red armor and it looks pretty cool on him. You should try and get some for your Qun.
