I know I did Emprise before the Graves my last game and it worked fine. It's a "feel" thing as I suggested to Alexia. You probably can do some of the missions in Emerald Graves at those levels before Emprise. I did not.

I even did the Emprise fortress before the one in the approach. I admit I used this tactic: clean up a section of Templars and check potion lvls. If low-dash back to the Inquisition camp outside the fortress and restock before running back to tackle the next section. I enjoyed playing it like that as it gave it a real siege feel for me. However I can see how it would annoy others who'd rather be at a level where they can take it at one go. It's a "feel" thing.

Alexia, take all of this as general advice. Play it your way or by how you feel it works best for you. If an area seems too tough for your party just make a note to come back and try it again later.

How I feel..is that the damn game doesnt drag me by the nose...I'm used to that in my old Games . Never had this issue..heck even MMO....drag ya by the nose...and it feel good . But this..unlock Maps..and do watever...its nightmarish to me..its Skyrim all over again...Go exploreeee...I rather commit suicide... <_<

YA proposing I do hawke + warden BEFORe I do crestwood ? arent they tied together......anyway ?? because ya gotta do crestwood ...it change from night time to daylight..and THen ya can go find Hawke in a cave..........

Hawke and Warden is just one part of the Crestwood map. You can do them before or after doing the rest of the Crestwood plotline.

Hmmm... What do you do on the other side of those bridges? Rescue a large group of Celene's forces from an undead army, stop a Darkspawn incursion/chase down one of Corypheus's Henchmen, or slay three dragons. I personally don't equate "not an integral part of the main plot" with "trivial" but there you go...

Did you know any of those things were likely to be there before you went? I'll admit I'd largely disengaged from everything besides characters by the end (both times) and probably missed a lot, but I don't remember many occasions when I had a reason to go somewhere, things just sort of happened.

I totally agree. I want to be told where to go! I like how DA:O handled it. You have 3 places you can go and you can do them in any order, but you know where you're going and why.

I think for people used to the old games where you followed a certain progression more it might be a shock. But it's not really the fault of an "open-world" design as I see some claim.

Over the summer I played a lot of Divinity: Original Sin which had open-ish areas but where you generally progressed from one map to the next in a pre-set order. However it had one thing in common with this game which is the real factor: enemies did not lvl with the player. Even constrained to progress in a certain map order you would find certain areas of each map locked to you because enemies were at a higher lvl so you had to to some quests in other areas of each map in order to come back and hit the harder enemies. It's kind of the same here. I, personally, like that enemies do not scale with me. It's great to be knocked on my butt sometimes. I remember first playing Skyrim and having the same enjoyment from running from the first giant who thumped me. I had that Monty Python bit in my head "Run Away! Run Away!"

I don't think you have to leave Crestwood after talking to Hawke, I think you stay on the same map. So I'd finish Crestwood fully (or at least get rid of the rain and undead) and then continue on.

Oh! Last page I posted my example of how I run the maps. :)

See I hate it because I don't want to travel back and forth. I want to finish my map on the first run!

Part of why I didn't go back to the citadel in ME, because I thought I was done with it. Lol.

Also isn't the sense of the unknown around every corner grand? I love exploring and I loved little things like not seeing the giants first but hearing them...hair-raising! I love exploration! Being led by the nose is ok if the story is so good that you want to be.

It depends, but yes, more or less. You need to read the text of the war table missions: Eg.

Commander Cullen,

We have scattered reports of darkspawn in the area, but it has been difficult to track down their point of origin. They're less hampered by the sulphur pits than we are and our guess is that they are coming from somewhere on the far side.

Our troops can bridge the pits, which should allow us to cross safely and find the location of the darkspawn, but we will need significant resources to ensure the safety of the men while construction is under way.

I await your orders, ser.

Lieutenant Tamsen

Leads to:

Commander Cullen,

Thanks to the reinforcements you sent, we constructed the bridge safely with minimal losses and fortified it in the event that darkspawn tried to use it themselves.

The darkspawn are coming from ruins that appear to be Tevinter. Per your orders, I am restricting the troops to scouting and guard patrols until the ruins can be investigated.

Lieutenant Tamsen

Yeah there was an early bug with that. I never experienced it but some did. I played the alpha and then the beta so I knew to go to the village, do the quests there, and under the village (graveyard leads to underground area with easy enemies) and then head west out of town for easier enemies before heading north then east in that order. But that game made no effort to tell people they had to do it that way and I know it pissed some people off big time.

You can do yes. Personally I try do everything in Crestwood all at once, except kill the dragon, but Hawke can be at any point you like, and you could wander off and come back.

Yep, different strokes for different folks.   I liked how they did it in Origins too and if they go back to that for the next game that's fine with me. However if they keep it like it is I am great with that too.  :) I liked this game. I liked Origins too.

I did get my interview, and I outed the council and Saren for the Eden Prime mess! They were mad at me, but I was pleased with myself.
