They want one that is only for them, being Bi isn't really being lesbian since they like both men and women, which we have seen in EVERY bioware game, the only 100% lesbian romance was Samantha Traynor in ME 3 and she was a NPC. Lesbian gamers are looking forward to having a romance option that is just for them and placing a race restriction would ruin it for them, is that selfish? maybe a little but that is human nature for you, and most of them probably prefer playing as a human. As I said I don''t think the gender gated ones will also have race restrictions, the only ones I see having race gating could be Cassandra and Cullen (this is romance options who are already confirmed of course) since I can't see either of them being interested in at least Qunari. I also could see Vivienne being race gated since a person with her standards wouldn't date what most of Thedes see as lower class people like Elves, Dwarfs and Qunari but you never know. With Sera's personality alone I can't see her being turned off by other races.

As a lesbian gamer, I give no s**ts whether the women available to me are bisexual, gay, pansexual, or even straight-but-curious. I want lesbian characters but a character can be gay without them being available for romance.

I side-eye gay women who object to bisexual women as love interest, especially as the rationale often makes me think the speaker tends to put too much importance on straight male sexuality.

Though one time a bisexual woman told me she really liked lesbians because they made her feels special. To this day, I don't understand her explanation but it was nice for the ego.

Well I'm only going by whatI have seen people say, I really can't say much since I'm a straight male, but I don't mind playing as a female character especially when I can play as one who likes girls and is still a badass lol. Also as I have stated I'm a yuri genre fan so that's why I was happy when we finally got a female only romance and I always play as a human female so thats why I don't want Sera to be race gated but even if she is I still think she will be available to humans.

I doubt they'd gate her against the race 80% of people play.

Yeah that's one of my other points, I hope she is available to every race since I was interested in romancing her as a female Qunari and it seems many others are to after some of the artwork I have seen.

If I ever play female, she's definitely my first option.. but more than likely, I'll ride it out solo. Never got into romancing anyone as a female Warden or Hawke before (be it male or female). Although I liked the female Hawke quite a bit.

but yeah Fem Hawke x Isabela has been one of my favorite Dragon Age pairings for a while but I'm sure Fem Inquisitor x Sera is going to give them a run for their money.

Vivienne being bisexual would mean 3 possible LIs... that's more than any BioWare game. That's more than straight people got in DA:O and something only straight women got in DA 2.

Would it really be unfair to lesbians if one were race-gated?

Yes. Unfortunately, we have to deal with this gating crap regardless.

I dunno, I'm afraid it could send a message that being a lesbian is just mere personal preference, on the same level as having race preference.

It would be especially damaging to us since there are already such myths about lesbian sexuality, that we're not *really* gay like gay men, and all it takes to turn us is the right man.

I disagree that Sera only being interested in a specific race or races would suggest lesbianism is simply a matter of (good) taste. I don't think race-gating will happen with Sera though, and I prefer it if she were open to everyone.

What if they race-gate Cassandra? I personally like the idea if its for certain story reasons.

I don't know who else they would race-gate.

If she won't want to date some race because of personal issues, I bet many people will make connection in their heads with the stories that lesbians date women only because they have issues with men, were abused by them, etc.

And IIRC, it was said that there will be reasons why certain characters don't want to date PC's of certain race. So it won't be "I don't want to date you just because I don't find you attractive".

If she's only attracted to dwarven men, that's going to raise questions.

Stupid Varrric and his manliness.

Highly doubt they will race gate sera. Doesn't really fly with what we know of her character IMO.
I'd prefer if they race gated bi companions if they are going to do it.

Lol that definitely would be the most unexpected reveal of them all. Which would suck in my case since I'm playing to play human :P

It's not up to BioWare to make queer characters who avoid any possible negative association.

People could have connected Isabela's bisexuality (or race) with her being highly sexually active. People could have connected Leliana and Zevran's bisexuality with their lack of ethics and willingness to kill.

If Cassandra were available to women, I'm sure some would have connected her more masculine appearance with her sexuality. If Vivienne is bisexual, I expect that someone will connect that with her being ruthless and interested in power.

The wonderful thing about bigotry is that if someone is in a group you have a prejudice against, you will always be able to find evidence of your negative preconceptions being right. If someone decides that attraction to women is simply a matter of taste, they already have evidence of it in Sera: She's anti-authority, isn't she? What's more rebellious in elven culture than not having children?

Nah, Cass and Sera are safe from race-gating..... they're already gender gated so I very much doubt they'll add another gating.

Besides, they didn't say anything about race gating when they announced Cass and or Sera.

I wouldn't rule out Cass, but I definitely think Sera is safe.

I can't see anything that screams out race-gating from cass, unlike Vivienne who if she is a li seems to me highly likely to be gated.

Well, I'm not sure either. But I'm just saying not to rule her out.

Don't forget that she was already beign written as a romance back when DA:I was still going to feature only a human protagonist. Maybe they have a certain story in mind for her that is only possible with a human?

My gut feeling is that the race gated romances are the two still not announced.

If Varric is a romance then I definitely believe he will be race-gated. But he'll most likely be straight, which would break the even numbers they have now.

I have to disagree with you on this. Those things don't exist in vacuum, it has impact on visibility of minority groups that are represented in game, which in turn has impact on how people who belong to those groups are treated in real life. That's why devs should be extra careful how they handle those matters. The fact 2 out of 3 bisexual characters (sexuality of most of DA2 companions is arguable) were promiscuous is damaging trope about bisexuals, and there was something even worse about Zevran. Judging from his words, it looked like he sleeps with men because he has "learned" to do it during his time with Crows. That sent really damaging message, not only about bisexual men (there are myths about them too, that men cannot be *really* bisexual), but about all non-straight people, since it handled same-sex attraction.

Besides, you had discussion with Lucas because you were concerned if male writer could write lesbian character well. What else was it about than about your concerns about lesbian representation, which means, among the others, avoiding negative associations?
