Being bisexual myself, the "promiscuous bi" characters didn't bother me as much as the people who kept saying that all bi characters needed to be like that to be "realistic" promiscuity is not a rule for being "truly" bisexual, someone shy & sexually inexperienced like Merrill is just as realistic as someone like Zevran.

It's not "okay" because she's already gated to one gender, and F/F at that.

That doesn't rule her out, along with Cass, Cullen, or.Dorian being possibly race-gated

I agree with some criticism of BioWare's handling of bisexual characters, especially Zevran's attitude toward relationship and sex with males.

I think Isabela's 'promiscuity' was excellent. Her attitude toward sex and fulfilling her desires was positive, she was confident and comfortable with herself, and the game never feels the need to shame her for her behavior. Some bisexuals have a lot of sex with lots of different people, and there's nothing wrong with that.

And BioWare has had other bisexual women who aren't like that: Liara (shy, awkward virgin), Merrill (shy, awkward virginal), Silk Fox (strongly hinted to be a virgin), and Leliana (romantic, wanting to take it slow, wanting a committed relationship.)

If Isabela had been the only bisexual BioWare created, I would not like her portrayal, but she comes in a game with three other bisexual companions and after BioWare has created several bisexual love interests.

And no, my question toward Luke had nothing to do with representation. I am not worried that he'll create something offensive or damaging, nor even that I'll dislike Sera. If anything, I dislike the modern tendency to portray lesbians as happily taking part in conventional, hetero-normative society.

If BioWare announced they were going to have a butch, ball-busting qunari woman who had no sense of humor as a lesbian companion, I'd be all for it.

Does "race-gating" mean only one race has access to the romance, or one is excluded? Or do we not know this information yet?

Nah, Cass and Sera are safe from race-gating..... they're already gender gated so I very much doubt they'll add another gating.


Besides, they didn't say anything about race gating when they announced Cass and or Sera.

They said that the race-gating is for story reasons, so.I doubt they'll reveal it yet

Plus they never said the already confirmed romances wouldn't be race-gated as well

David has talked about having various stories he wants to explore with Dorian and Cassandra. I think being gay in Tevinter is meaningful enough that it could be part of his larger story. I don't know how that applies to Cassandra, but David will likely talk about it after the game ships.

As for Sera, Allan has said that Luke wanted to make her a lesbian, and nothing Luke has said regarding her sexuality makes me think it's for 'story reasons.'

I think the idea that there may be story reasons behind Sera's sexuality is pretty much moot at this point. It was fun to speculate about it for a little while, but that's about it.

Yeah, that's what I was always afraid of. I know a lot of people don't understand the complaint of wanting to have a LI that is important to the main story, but this kinda falls in with that as well. I feel like Sera being a lesbian is probably going to go about as deep as "because lol I felt like it" and wont be explored any further than that. 

 

I was still very much on board with that imagined scenario of Cassandra being surprised by being attracted to a female Inquisitor, because it's way more three dimensional and interesting from a character standpoint than just "hey I like your face and your a lady, lets make out", but alas.
