Far to many people end up living their life by standards, viewpoints and ideals that are not their own. To me it's maddening, because when you do so, you are not living your life, you are living someones else's. More people should dare to be themselves.

I always think: It's such a short time we have on this planet that it's a shame if you can't be yourself. That's got to be a hell I can't imagine. I resent people who try and judge us in the name of some man in the sky. If you want us to live in fear of something that's pretty sad or if it's your deity that compels you to judge then is that entity worthy of praise? Hank Williams said/sang it best "Mind your own business and you won't be minding mine!"

Well... 50 shades is a bit of a special case as I've heard from several sources that it dangerously mis-represents the BDSM lifestyle, but if it's just something that's crappily written, I don't care. It's not for me to tell people what to like. I might suggest something that I like better, and let the person see if they can appreciate the other author, but I will not make someone feel bad for enjoying something.

Part of why I specifically pointed out both Twilight and 50 Shades is because of the harmful relationships they promote.

Christian Grey is a predator. He gets involved with this naive, shy young woman and pretty much turns her into his ideal submissive through manipulation and scare tactics, but it's seen as this romantic story because he's a rich, handsome millionaire and she ends up enjoying the sex.

It's just bad all around. Consent is a really big issue in the story.

So yes, it's basically a story about control.

Even if who they are is a discriminatory a-hole who hurts people to get their jollies?

*being facetious* Being yourself is fine. Just remember that you share space with other people. ;)

I just think it promotes harmful practices and is an insult to the people in the bdsm community.

Plus it reminds me of all those bad male power-trip movies from the 80's like 9 1/2 weeks or some crap with Michael Douglas. It's risible, risible!

Rather fitting, considering 50 shades started as a fanfic of Twilight.

I never had stitch....I usually say no..and they gave me instead this white powder..the only bad side..is that ya gotta keep wathever thats open closed with ya finger until it start closing lol

I have had a lot of stitches over the years. 19 on my left arm. Eight on my left hand/fingers. Nine or more on each knee. 15 total on my head. 4 on my forehead and face. 17 on my right shoulder. 20 on my left peck. I'm probably missing a few. I have had a few surgeries and serious injures. At this point I'm not looking forward to getting older. Because when I do, I'll  probably creak like a door whenever I move. lol

Dangerous control that presents manipulation and stalking as totally acceptable. You can't just put in that little label and walk away. Like I said, it promotes a lot of harmful practices.

The other thing with Twilight/50  Shades is that the chances of me reading them are zero, so I wouldn't feel qualified to comment further than to direct them to people who know more about them and have problems.

Consent is one of the most important words in English, to me. It's like air... without it, nothing else really matters much.

Ain't that the sad truth. Change the names and you can see how truly far removed from the original characters the story strayed.

I'm sure it's grand, but I'm still boycotting all things 50 Shades.

It's a poke at it Dazzle. It's taking the P*ss. Key words: Gilbert Gottfried. It's satire.

Well said! I'm with you.

A lot of women, I've heard this from a few friends in the community, have started trying to get into bdsm because they think the book is sexy but once they learn what it's really like they freak out.

There are women trying to get into bdsm who don't have a clue what nipple clamps are (very tame example) and they have a meltdown at the workshops.

This is why the first thing I did in my post was to preface that I have no problem with people as long as they are doing no harm. Doing something to someone without their consent, be that violently, sexually, emotionally or whatever combination of the three may be the case, certainly falls under "harm" to me.

Essentially you don't promote it, and you don't spend money on it.

Last try: It's making fun of the book Daz. It's made by people who dislike it like you do. Fair enough if you won't click it simply cause it exists but it's anti-50 shades like you are.
