Yeah, actually it does.

...Okay.

To be clear I wasn't actually trying to belittle your criticism.

Not a malevolent spirit, no :)

That's what Anders would say.

...One day I will not get malevolent and benevolent mixed up. One day.

Hazzah, Dazzle was proven wrong! :P

After years of finding so much male pov in novels and games, and female characters being kind of shallow or weird carnival mirror stereotypes, I’ve pretty much ruled out games or novels in which there isn’t an interesting female pov character at least half of it. Game won’t let me make a female character? Not playing. Book has a male pov character for the whole story? Not reading it. It's just a personal thing for me, what I need in a story, in my escapism.

My to-read list/notes file is about fifty pages long, so I don’t think this choice is hurting me.

Dazzle's supervillain status: ambiguous.

I was just about to recommend a series that I love, but I think you've got enough on your list. :P

It's great that you have so much to read that fits your criteria. Long may your situation continue to improve.

I wonder if in some ways that's also why I am tending to prefer playing as women more. Obviously I'm not seeking representation of my sex, but I've played as a million and one testosterone-fueled macho men over my years in gaming. It's refreshing to have the chance to do something else.

I'm sort of like an Unseelie pixie. I don't necessarily have to do bad, but sometimes being bad is more fun! :P

I am totally open to recommendations. I didn't mean to discourage that :) Just thinking aloud.

Check out the Spinster Series by Gennifer Albin. It's YA, but I think it's brilliant world building.

I am hoping that the corrective won't simply be creating macho female characters though. Where we need to get to is plausible protagonists or choices for both sexes/genders or just more variety of options that add to story immersion in games and keep them more than just being one-dimensional or shallow.

I suppose there will always be a need for the very simple, dumb, fun action games but I am glad to see some more diverse and creative things happening that allow for more options to role-play in games.

just throwing my hat into pile of "I hate 50 shades of grey and everything it stands for" that y'all were talking about pages ago. it's definitely a terrible representation of the bdsm community and also not romantic in the least. control through manipulation and abuse isn't sexy. the fact that they released it on Valentine's Day is just....lordt.

okay. on to whatever else we're talking about in here.

Yeah just writing Generic Grizzled Action Hero and making that protagonist female isn't the best way to balance things. I do enjoy stories of reckless warrior women sometimes (oh do I ever), but there are so many ways to exercise power, so many ways to be strong, so many ways to be a hero, and a lot of stories out there seem a bit limited in that regard.

I like that BioWare games, despite having a lot of violence and badassery, do give you the opportunity to play things different ways, to be more diplomatic or more brutal, etc. In the Deus Ex games, I like that you can mostly play through the whole game without killing any enemies (despite the male only protagonists.) The more of that sort of thing (for both sexes) the better, I think.

@Dgyre

I tried that book a few years ago, but I didn't get all the way through. I can't remember what it was that put me off. I could try it again sometime because I've seen her name out there a lot.
