Yeah just writing Generic Grizzled Action Hero and making that protagonist female isn't the best way to balance things. I do enjoy stories of reckless warrior women sometimes (oh do I ever), but there are so many ways to exercise power, so many ways to be strong, so many ways to be a hero, and a lot of stories out there seem a bit limited in that regard.

Exactly. I forget where I read this recently but I want to say it was something Sarkeesian wrote that I read but I can't be certain. Anyway the gist of it was that you cannot simply create female action hero's as simplistic as the male ones and think "job done" cause the real goal is to write believable, well-presented, characters who are complex and capable of many different abilities and emotions. I thought that was a really astute observation and it's a shame I can't attribute it properly! But the gist of the argument I remember.

I want my persuasion skill back, I love being able to talk people out of or into choices

It's still there, except it's connected to knowledge perks now.

I think that argument illustrates how weak the 'standard hero formula' is. All characters should be believable, well-presented, complex, etc. Male or female, a flat character is boring.

I like that BioWare games, despite having a lot of violence and badassery, do give you the opportunity to play things different ways, to be more diplomatic or more brutal, etc. In the Deus Ex games, I like that you can mostly play through the whole game without killing any enemies (despite the male only protagonists.) The more of that sort of thing (for both sexes) the better, I think.

Yep. The BioWare characters do not please everyone and some choices have been controversial but in general they've handled the complexity of people and sexuality better than most games I've seen but they are not perfect yet either. I enjoyed Dishonored because it encouraged me to think outside of just killing everyone and everything. But then again that was a sole male protagonist and it was flawed in other respects. But we're getting there, hopefully.

I like the skilled level, and that you might fail....

I agree. I've gotten very bored with the hero as infallible and all knowing these days. I like my hero, male or female, to be ridden with doubt, uncertainty, open to fear and maybe uncertain of the correct moral or ethical path.

@Dgyre

I tried that book a few years ago, but I didn't get all the way through. I can't remember what it was that put me off. I could try it again sometime because I've seen her name out there a lot.

then maybe it won't be good for you, but the plot and characters do develop and things kind of take a big right turn at one point, so I would recommend reading through more than just one book in the series...but...if you you're not liking it....don't force it of course.

I like all kinds of issues in my characters, heroes and villains alike. The most interesting to me is questioning one's grip on reality.

''Is that stuff really happening? Is it just in my head? They're telling me there was no one there. Is that true? Are they lying to me? Why? I don't know who to trust. I don't know if I can trust myself. I know I put that letter there! Didn't I?''

It's both fascinating and terrifying.

There was a long (81 episode) Korean historical epic I saw that really impressed me with diversity of female characters. Women in power, as villains, as priestesses, as warriors, as servants in helpless situations, as queens, as merchants, as spies. As people.

I think most of my favorite games have been Bioware. Even when I’ve had a problem with something here or there in execution or characterization, I’ve enjoyed a lot of them. But I probably need to branch out more :)

That is terrifying. I like that uncertainty about reality too especially in the horror or supernatural genres so much better than just slam-bam gore or terror. Give me some doubt and give me some creepiness. Build some atmosphere and mood and let the tension build to a crescendo!

It was years ago that I tried it, though, so it's possible I could love it now if I tried it again.

Oh my god, I adore stuff like that. One of my most favourite stories was Before I Go to Sleep by S.J Watson. About a woman who has had brain trauma and now can't remember the last 10 years of her life, but also can't make new memories. Her brain resets every night when she falls asleep.

model MS #433 people do exist in real life, so I do think they should be included, but as part of a diverse group of characters.

I don't think we should go from one extreme to another, just try to have good representation of people, with interesting characters

No game can beat the pure comedy gold that is failed skill checks or low intelligence conversations in Fallout New Vegas.

I can't think of anything as close to BioWare. I did enjoy some of the interactions with characters in Mount and Blade: Warband but that's an indie game and they did not invest the same time in fleshing out npc's as BioWare did. You could still play as a female and they did make that challenging in that the lords in the game would, by and large, insult you or refuse to deal with you on the basis of your sex (which made kicking their butts that much more fun) but I had to headcanon a lot of stuff in those games or the mods (although some mods did flesh out the writing).

For me it's just the amount of times that we get this generic male type of character. Sure they exist, but I don't want my game protags to all feel like clones of one another.

I generally like them better as supporting characters, rather than the main...

although Master Chief is pretty solid
