I think my boss plays Mount and Blade. I've heard some things about it.

Mount&Blade is  a sandbox game..where ya hire peoples and take castles...and try to hold them . It has many mods that make it less boring...if ya arent in the sandbox style......

I did some modding on it a few years back. Fun game. Bit dated now but yeah very sandboxey which was part of it's charm and appeal. There's a new game in the works but it's been taking them a while as they are a small Turkish company.

I agree. I've gotten very bored with the hero as infallible and all knowing these days. I like my hero, male or female, to be ridden with doubt, uncertainty, open to fear and maybe uncertain of the correct moral or ethical path.

I think that's why what made me like Spawn, especially in the early issues. Todd did a great job of making a hero, who doubted himself, was pretty much uncertain of everything around him and very uncertain about himself. It's also clear that after coming back as Spawn, Al Simmons didn't want to be a hero anymore simply because it lead him to be killed by one of his best friends in the first place. But, the situation in Rat Alley forced him to take on the role of hero and protector again. He also made it very clear that he hated the fact that he was forced into the role of hero and protector again, especially to those he was forced to protect.

just throwing my hat into pile of "I hate 50 shades of grey and everything it stands for" that y'all were talking about pages ago. it's definitely a terrible representation of the bdsm community and also not romantic in the least. control through manipulation and abuse isn't sexy. the fact that they released it on Valentine's Day is just....lordt.

okay. on to whatever else we're talking about in here.

It was pointed out to me that this movie was actually released the day before, which was Friday the 13th, and I laughed a lot.

I can't think of anything as close to BioWare. I did enjoy some of the interactions with characters in Mount and Blade: Warband but that's an indie game and they did not invest the same time in fleshing out npc's as BioWare did. You could still play as a female and they did make that challenging in that the lords in the game would, by and large, insult you or refuse to deal with you on the basis of your sex (which made kicking their butts that much more fun) but I had to headcanon a lot of stuff in those games or the mods (although some mods did flesh out the writing).

Yeah... No other company quite makes games like BioWare. The Tomb Raider reboot was awesome for a female protagonist, and I really enjoyed Deus Ex: Human Revolution in terms of an action/RPG hybrid like Mass Effect, but it's a fixed male protagonist... It does have Faridah Malik, though...

I never read that one although my brother was a big fan of it.

I've been binging on the history of Soviet airwomen for the past few months, partly because it has this unusual perspective of women in combat which is similar and different to male history - it's also got stories like women climbing onto the wings in flight to kick bombs free of malfunctioning release mechanisms, but I digress.

The point is women in a typically male situation don't have to become typically male. Because they're still women, they're also still people and people are diverse.

----

I feel there's a flip thing here in that male characters (protagonists particularly) often aren't great either, and I think diversifying our heroes can only help that by breaking down what's allowed or successful.

No game can beat the pure comedy gold that is failed skill checks or low intelligence conversations in Fallout New Vegas.

Well there's the flirting with your own brain dialogue... also in New Vegas.

----

Talk of games with doubting heroes makes me feel I should point out that Spec Ops: The Line is a really amazing game if you get into it.

We added a lot of female npc's to one of them I worked on. I did a lot of writing for them but we blew up after we got the alpha out. Shame really but It's hard working with people at long distance who have different agendas at times.

I'm Bruuuuce with a varying number of u's.

I never read that one although my brother was a big fan of it.

You should give the first few issues a read. Spawn is a great hero simply because of how complex he is.

It really is. I thought it was a pretty great ending as well, and there aren't many games I find have great endings.

He'll go on the list. Still need to get to the Hellblazer re-read I was going to do and I still have to finish a vol. of Terry and the Pirates I started over the summer. My brother might have some of the Spawn stuff still.

I'd say it's a serious contender for the best ending.

I worked on some historical ones. I think that feature was an option in the last one I worked on but I am sure we binged the code for it from another mod.
