I should just roll with that quest as is.  It would be impressive to get 2 out of 3 of my Dragon Age LIs killed off in a matter of like, 30 seconds.

There should be an achievement for that.

...that whole demo you saw, in the last half of it, when you’re fighting with Alexius and Felix, not all the players are going to see that, because going into that area is the result of a branching choice in the game. So you may have picked another area and you wouldn’t be going into that castle at all, you’d be going somewhere else entirely.

So all that stuff with the mages and Leliana being tortured is skippable. Interesting. I mean, I knew you could have someone else in place of Leliana there, but I didn't think the quest itself would be optional. Wooo, RPGs!

I've noticed in both the demo thread in the Scuttlebutt and the Leliana thread, there's this prevailing sentiment from fans of specific characters that one should attempt to shield those characters or avoid any situation where they might come to harm. I understand where this comes from: I want to protect Sera and Leliana as well. At the same time, I hate the idea of basing one's game around companions or favored NPCs.

These character's exist to enhance my play experience, not dictate it.

This also makes me slightly worried about them getting rid of the rivalry path. If I play in a mostly consistent manner with a specific character I like, I don't want them to abandon me or betray me. Rivalry let me do that. Origins gave me gifts if I wanted to bribe my minions into complacency.

This doesn't mean I want them to bow down and kiss my boots. I enjoy it when companions challenge me or disagree with me. If I have a companion I really like but who doesn't like what I do, I either take them with me and lose out on them when their disagreement hits a certain level, or I leave them out of the party, which is losing out on their interactions and content.

And I don't care how realistic it is.

I prefer ME 2's method. Even if someone disagrees with what you do, if you complete their loyalty mission, they're buds and will be with you to the end.

I don't think it will be like "they will leave if you disagreed with them a few times". I think it was said that you really gotta behave bad towards them the entire time to get them to leave.

In DA:O, you could even outright ask them to leave. And once they do, you never see them again in that playthrough.

 

I think Maria has a point in saying ME2's method is preferable in this situation. It's not a perfect solution, but it does work without any ambiguity or inconsistencies.
