Sci-fi gets annoying for me because they're usually military stories. (Star Trek, Star Wars, Star Gate, Mass Effect, etc.)
While I'd argue Star Wars basically isn't military themed outside of key moments were the Rebellion turns up to lend everyone ships, I think that's an important point.
I like military sci-fi when that's the main theme, and they hit it hard. Most of what I found interesting in new BSG was Viper pilots with serious battle fatigue. I never finished the whole thing but the episodes Scar and 33 left a strong impression. However a lot of sci-fi is more passively military, usually marines shouting a lot and complaining about politicians - ME I'm looking at you. Beyond that there's more stories out there than just military ones.
