I wouldn't say they lied or disguised it. They are still role playing games with choices. It's just a lot more linear.
There were several occasions in ME1 were all three options on the dialogue wheel would lead to the same line from Shepard and the same response from the dialogue's participant(s). There was one choice being presented as three.
Generally though ME1 and 2 reguarly ask what you want Shepard to say but there is very little possible change in what Shepard says. ME3 cuts down on the formality of asking but also makes the lack of choice more obvious.
Of course offering choice to the player is a horrendous nightmare for the developer, so it is understandable.

that.... that's sorta crappy. understandable but crappy. is it because they had more characters to cover (squad and important ship-NPCs) so the word limit was stretched thin?

The word count got increased by a lot from game to game to accommodate for all of the companions. I think they were just trying to do something different, which wasn't needed but developers tend to think change is good.

we dont typically have soda at my house, we mostly just have iced tea. which I'm pretty much addicted to. we only bought the soda because we didnt have time to go out to buy iced tea mix lol.
