The problem is the Frostbite engine itself. It's full of system resource mismanagment issues and as is very GPU unfriendly like Nub said.

While EA and Bioware will not admit it, Bioware was pushed by EA to use it for DA:I. Simply because EA wants to push Frostbite as the go to engine for video game development. They are doing this because we are, thankfully, getting back to the days where companies are slugging it out to prove that their game engine is the best. This is why Crytech and Epic Games moved from a flat fee for video game engine licence to a subscription program.  But, Epic has pretty much won this war because the Unreal 4 engine is now free to download and use. Future updates to the engine will be free as well. The only time you owe Epic a cent is:  The 5% royalty starts after the first $3,000 of revenue per product per quarter. Pay no royalty for film projects, contracting and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation and visualization.

To put this in perspective for the non-game engine nut jobs. Epic is giving away the Ferrari of video game engines for free.

This is not a picture of someones house. This is a picture of what someone created with the Unreal Engine  4. Dazzle you really need to check out the video as well.

Holy sh*t! Are there any games out at the moment that use Unreal 4?

It's always the same thing in the entertainment business: something is successful and makes a lot of money. We get a bunch of copycats and knock offs with better graphics but no grasp of what made the original work so good. The formula gets repeated until it stops making money, then the hunt is on for the next cash cow.

That's why we've had so many super hero movies in the last decade. It's what's 'in vogue' at the moment, but it's been losing momentum.

Tons of Zombie games and survival games and superhero movies. I can't see where it is losing momentum but I hope you're right Cat.

*Now Marvel can feel free to give me more Agent Carter on my telly. :)

Not many at the moment. But, there are a few in development worth keeping an eye on for sure. Eve: Valkryie is worth checking out for sure. It's a space ship dog fighting sim that will be taking advantage of both Unreal Engine 4 and VR tech such as the Oculus rift . The goal is to give you a complete 360 degree view in game using a VR headset, paired with the graphic quality of Unreal Engine 4 and fast paced game play. If they can pull it off, it might be another big leap forward in gaming.

As far as zombie games go, the genre was dying after the failure of Resident Evil 6, but it got a second wind because of the Walking Dead tv series and subsequent Telltale games. Speaking of Telltale: adventure games based on conversation, item collection and puzzle solving had been utterly dead since the late 90s. Now the genre is rising again. Telltale took a massive risk by going with a genre that had not made any money in over a decade and look how it paid off.

Rockstar had kinda tried it with LA Noire, but it did not work all that well because the sandbox format does not lend itself well to that. The game was good, but the chief complaint was how frustrating it was to navigate this huge sandbox with nothing to do in it outside of cases. The game would probably have been better received if there had been less pointless driving around and more cases.

Ah. I'm not really sure what to make of those headsets. Sounds like a cool idea though. It sounds a little similar (It involves flying around space) to No Mans Sky which is a game coming out hopefully sometime this year.

The biggest reason gaming is so stale is because we no longer have a middle market in the industry. It's either a small indie title or a AAA game. This has lead to an industry that is largely focused on profit with no innovation and little work. Some of the best and biggest game titles these days started out as middle market titles. I just hope that Epic giving away Unreal Engine 4 will help spur a rebirth of the gaming middle market. Because indie games can't save the gaming market and AAA developers/publishers seem dead set on sinking it.

Sure there are bright spots like the Telltale games. But, they are few and far between.

The focus on graphics in video games is similar to the focus on special effects in movies. Telltale Games has shown that you don't need super fancy graphics to have a great game. Both The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us are fantastic yet have simple graphics.

Those things are usually cyclical. I'm sure the current 'corporate bubble' will burst eventually. It happens in just about every other market.

Yep, and that's why it's infuriating when so many games put a massive focus on graphics. Sure the game looks nice, but when the gameplay is bland, the story sucks and the pacing of the entire game is terrible, do graphics really make up for it?

Give me games like Doom and movies that use practical effects any day over most AAA games and movies.

No idea. I don't have the game anymore. I traded it in for the complete LA Noire edition.
