Argh now I have all these thoughts about the parallels between Sera and Bull and how interesting I think both of their arcs are, these fundamentally grounded characters whose arcs hang on them being swept up in big abstract questions about identity, I should travel with them more, I need to hear all their banter. I'm sure it's hilarious and illuminating.

Some of the best banter in the game is between those two, imo.

I hate Iron Bull. I don't find him interesting at all.

... I guess I probably have said that too much today though.

Not sure I'd even call him grounded. I'm not sure what part of him is the real one. The Qunari or the hedonist. He seems like a poser either way. Like at different times, he's trying too hard to be one or the other. While Sera is sincere in her grounding.

I romanced Liara in ME1, but because of the import bug on pc, I didn't carry it though ME2 and ME3. I so romanced Jack in ME2 and carried it on in ME3. Truth be told, even if I bothered fixing the import issue before starting ME2, I would have still romanced Jack. Might romance Tali in ME2 after my current ME1 playthrough is finished.

Yeah, Jack, Tali and Garrus are the best companions/romances. The rest of em bore me. I don't understand why Liara gets so much love, she has about as much personality as a rock. And Miranda and Samara are just boobs with legs( sure they have some cool story elements but, nothing like the rest of the characters ). Sigh, why wasn't Jack bisexual? Poor Femshep spent many nights crying herself to sleep wishing she was lol.

As a Jack fan, I always kind of wished she was Bi too. She deserved more exposure. Like the counterpoint biotic to Liara, that both male and female players could explore. Instead Jack is not as popular as she deserved.

I think that was intentional. His entire life was defined by others and his role as a soldier( his purpose, beliefs etc ). So, I think perhaps he doesn't even know what to do with himself.

You should! I just had a weird, but interesting banter with Sera and Iron Bull. I tend to be drawn to the humorous characters, since I mostly hang with people that likes to joke a lot. Makes me feel at home a little. Cassandra, Iron Bull, and Sera are really great together.

Jack is my favorite character in ME. It's a shame that a lot of people probably saw the tattoos, her attitude and wrote her off. If you are willing to look past these things and get to know her as well as her past, she is a great character. Though for me the tattoos where a plus. lol

He isn't funny to me either. I wish that could be the one redeeming factor, but it isn't. I end up just seeing the writer behind it trying to be funny. Which is probably the worst thing a writer could hope for, I guess. That I see him instead of the character.

The other thing I like about her.. and maybe it isn't mentioned often.. Is that she has some interesting ties to the main themes of ME.

Human endeavor and evolution and whatnot. But she's in this interesting middle ground that isn't pro-Alien nor Pro-Cerberus. Its some other independent state. And in a romance, Shepard kind of helps her find her own way. Finally finding something in Grissom.

The games always pushed an either/or choice, but Jack kind of represents another (and better) path for humanity for me. She doesn't get enough mention of being a "major theme" character, but I think she is... in a subtle way.

It's not that he is poser. The thing about Bull that you have to keep in mind is the fact that he is very much being torn between two different lifes. On oneside he is a Ben-Hassrath agent and loyal to the Qun. On the other side he is more or less a Tal-Vashoth leader of a marc band. Things like drinking, sleeping around and overindulging are clear violations of the Qun and he does them, even after being "reeducated."  He jumps between the two due to a major inner conflict. He's trying to hold onto one side while not completely letting go of the other.

I suppose I would have liked this more if...

I don't know... Before release, I thought it'd be a lot more hilarious, like Randy Quaid in Kingpin. Where he's almost childlike in his abandon. But he's pretty self-aware, no matter what mode he wishes to convey. It comes off more like an act.

Actually, I should add to that.. I would have probably liked it more if he was just discovering the outside world. And abandoning himself to it. That's what I meant by the Kingpin reference.

Instead, he's instantly world wise and giving US advise on how to live. And basically just a human.. with a different skin texture. It's annoying coming from a Qunari.

I thought Jack would've been a much better romance if it didn't operate on the idea that abuse victims need the D to help them overcome past traumas. The difference between a romanced Jack and an unromanced Jack is kind of stark, to the point where her personality shift between ME2 and ME3 is a bit much in the third game unless she was romanced. Unromanced Jack is still basically a b*tchy murderer at the end of ME2 - to jump from that to being a relatively low-key teacher and mentor over the course of six months is kind of a huge deal.
