It's a Dwarf thing in that particular case. Scene worked fine for my male human rogue.

Hmmm... I wonder if she'd pick up magic as easily as she did archery? Can one be a self-taught mage? The elves have their keepers to teach them, and even Morrigan had help from Flemeth. If she wasn't taken in by the circles I think there's a good chance that she'd end up dead...

Mages without training tend to turn into "hedge mages" who basically have some weird tricks that they don't really know how they do, and can't really learn proper magic.

If they don't go crazy

Yeah, I've thought about this.. I'd think they'd come up with cool powers, but maybe as just one trick ponies. Not always useful.

At one point, I thought Cole was one.. That's been proven wrong. But I still think his unique shifting is probably similar to how a hedge mage comes about their ability.

They'd need a spell creation system..

Sorry, but not gonna happen. They keep simplifying things. Not expanding.

Even TES gave up on that.. :\

I'll assume she'd be able to escape or avoid the circle, so probably not very different, she'd just have a bigger bag of tricks.

I she was stuck in circle for very long, I can't see it ending well.

The templars do seem to be more vigilant than the law enforcers Sera's contended with in canon, and an urchin apostate with randomly manifesting powers in Denerim shouldn't be too hard to track. Unless, of course, she developed magic while living with that one other woman, in which case things would go rather more simply.

DnD had a hedge mage it was called the Wild Mage. It was fun to play but incredibly dangerous to the party as well as yourself. Whenever you cast a spell you rolled on a chart lol, created some hilarious situations. Oh, hey let me buff you with Mage Armor
* accidentally casts fireball *. Ahhhhhhh,* party runs around engulfed in flames *.

It doesn't make sense for a lot of hedge mages. Morrigan is one, but she has the good excuse of being Flemeth's daughter. Flemeth would teach her all kinds of schools, similar to a Circle...and then some. Others would be like those kids in X-Men comics, discovering mutant powers. And without discipline, it'd just develop in some unique way.

more than technicality. Morrigan has a real plot. She's schooled, really. Not exactly hedge mage..

Actually, we already got a character like this. Hawke.

If I play a mage it's a Necromancer. I have the Book of Libris Mortis and the Champions of horror. There are some truly twisted spells and prestige classes( specializations ) in em. As well as some rank and dirty feats( perks ).

Well, lets get back on track.

You want a non-schooled, hedge mage, right?

But you want classes?

I don't know.. I guess I just imagine it working better with a spell creation system. Start off with a menu of elements and effects you can combine. Then build more from there as you level up. Maybe by the end, you'd resemble typical mages.

I tend to assume 'spells' are as representative of magic as talents are representative of mundane combat. A mage could cast fire with all the complexity of a gymnast using throwing themselves through the air, but it is represented by a spell with a flame template, and a spell with a blast template because video games.

I think what you're suggesting could work for any mage, possibly better than what they have now that I think about it.

DA needs fraken multiclasses. So power mad loons like myself can run Rogue/Mage cross-class characters and scream Unlimited Power! But, that's just my opinion and all.

Well, I think the Tempest specialisation could actually be pretty easily re-fluffed as a particular brand of hedge magic.  Just get rid of the "elixir" angle.
