Happy birthday to everybody who is celebrating one, or who has celebrated one recently - Kasumi, Crimmy, Uncle, all y'all. :)

German culture has some strange notions of how to do that. My personal favorite is Krampus.

This is more of an "early modern Europe" thing than a "Germany" thing, see e.g. Charles Perrault's Histoires ou contes du temps passé in their original, non-Disneyfied versions.

Humor in premodern European society was often casually brutal and played off of physical harm and even death for purposes of amusement (there's a great collection of essays on very early examples here); while der Struwwelpeter was written in significant part to model 'proper' behavior, the stories were also meant to be entertaining. The actual title of the book, after all, was "Funny Stories and Amusing Pictures", and for decades the book's reputation was more "childhood classic" than "tales of terror to scare kids onto the straight and narrow". Just as Disney cleaned up stories like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella, German film industry in the fifties cleaned up Struwwelpeter by removing the mutilations and whatnot and giving the stories happier endings.

And, to forestall your usual "I already knew that" protestation, this post is directed at the entire discussion of the topic in this thread, not at your post specifically.

Thank you for that post but your last line is really what I have an issue with you on. You're often very condescending and arrogant and you often assume people don't know anything. Now it's very true we may not know as much as you, or I may not, but there is a right way and a wrong way to tell someone something. You do it on a high horse. Also claiming it's not directed at me while quoting me specifically is really poor on you part. I think you're very bright and I also liked most of this post and no I did not know it so I probably would have liked it but the last line is what makes it really difficult for me not to just dislike you.

Update: I killed a few more of them and then they let me stay?? So I freed the kid and told his dad not to blacklist vegas of all food. Was looking forward to telling the Mortimer guy that I own him now, but he disappeared. :(

This game is ridiculous. I love how many different ways you can solve things. I'm picking bad ideas every time just to pick them. Like you can bang Benny, what the heck?

That's one of the reasons why the game is good, there are multiple ways to solve problems. :)

I didn't know that. That's quite interesting.

Just of note: I am not, nor will I ever be a cannibal. I'm not totally messed up.

<slowontheuptake>OK... I missed the part where Eirene changed into Aimi, didn't I? </slowontheuptake>

In other news, I just got back from eating a lovely Argentinian steak and drinking slightly too much Malbec from the same country... *burp*
