Sorry, I am a science geek and I do understand what I'm talking about (I could stand to brush up on my research though) so I get a little excited.

I understand to an extent but trying to prove something is a little more difficult for me.

Technically no. You can make white by mixing every other colour together using equal quantities, but you cannot make black. You can make shades of black - technically, that would be considered grey - but not black black.

...then how can one make black? magic? sacrifice?

black is not a color!?

It's the absence of it. Or something like that. I think. Maybe.

I don't know, are those freckles?

I thought they were too big for freckles but I'm no expert. Whatever they are, they're cute as hell :D

Red from the blood of its prey? Polar bears are quite aggressive.

I don't know. I just know that white is all colour and black is no colour. The closest you can make to a pure black is by mixing together Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and a blackish pigment (Really, really dark grey.)

It is also the absence of light. Go into a photographic dark room with zero light coming from any source. What you see is pure black. That is the only way you will ever find pure black (besides going to a black hole in space)

Actually I believe their skin is black, the fur is nearly translucent and hollow which makes them look white.

Edit: at least that's what they told us.

A polar bear, if judging by the colour of their fur (how most people would envision a polar bear) it would be considered white. White is a colour because it reflects all forms of light, compared to black which absorbs all light.

Another fun fact. Red, in China, is considered a happy colour, whereas in the UK, it is considered a dangerous colour. It is also the colour of passion and romance.

Blue is also used, at least in the UK, to invoke intelligence, which is why most IT/Technology companies use blue in their brand identities.

I think Polar bears are actually more of a cream or magnolia...

As to defining what colour is, that's tough because there are our perceptions using our (limited) human vision (there are insects that can see colours that we can't), and then there are scientific measures of frequencies of light and such. It really depends on how you frame the question...

That's the reason their skin is black. Helps keep them warm

Edit: from Wikipedia

Polar bears are superbly insulated by up to 10 cm (4 in) of blubber,[52] their hide and their fur; they overheat at temperatures above 10 °C (50 °F), and are nearly invisible under infrared photography.[54] Polar bear fur consists of a layer of dense underfur and an outer layer of guard hairs, which appear white to tan but are actually transparent.[52] The guard hair is 5–15 cm (2–6 in) over most of the body.[55] Polar bears gradually moult from May to August,[56] but, unlike other Arctic mammals, they do not shed their coat for a darker shade to camouflage themselves in the summer conditions. The hollow guard hairs of a polar bear coat were once thought to act as fiber-optic tubes to conduct light to its black skin, where it could be absorbed; however, this theory was disproved by recent studies.[57]

I was Stormheart before that Stormheart. Just look at it, lounging around with its mineral deposit buddies forming irregular geodesic shapes.

Well there are two major arguments for whether black is a colour or not. Colour as light, and colour as a pigment. Colour as light considers it not a colour. Colour as a pigment, it is. Based purely on my creative side, black is a colour.

One argument for colour as light is the rainbow. The rainbow appears because of the light of the sun reflecting and splitting into the colours that make up light. A rainbow actually has every colour in it, but our eyes can only see seven.
