Yeah. I think you are right with their fur being translucent. It allows the light to pass through and be absorbed. I think the reason why they appear as white is because of the evolutionary process. If they weren't white, they'd stick out like a sore thumb.

I've enjoyed this discussion. 
Well there are two major arguments for whether black is a colour or not. Colour as light, and colour as a pigment. Colour as light considers it not a colour. Colour as a pigment, it is. Based purely on my creative side, black is a colour.
One argument for colour as light is the rainbow. The rainbow appears because of the light of the sun reflecting and splitting into the colours that make up light. A rainbow actually has every colour in it, but our eyes can only see seven.
Well... Amazingly there are different cultures that can pick out gradations in colour differently. If you have colours associated with closely grouped frequencies of light, Europeans may not be able to tell them apart, but certain African tribes can. The opposite is true in other parts of the spectrum. It seems that even our perception of colour is slightly affected by our language and how we define what colours are.
And then as I say there are the flowers that have patterns in colours that are in the ultraviolet range that we can't see, but insects can...
In the absence of light... darkness prevails.

Oh, that won't effect the romance if you skip it then? I just have a bad habit of needing to exhaust every bit of character dialogue I can in games.
Well I loaded a save after the Temple and before that conversation and just ran through the games' ending (for science) and it all seemed to work.
For example, the Second World War had ended. Woman took over the mens jobs and weren't going to go back to being housewives and living of the men.
After the war gender roles snapped back pretty quickly - at least in some places it was worse, I suspect that might be generally true. Things had been shaken up and that probably contributed to what was to come though.
That's a simplistic version of what happened and there are fuller accounts you can read but yeah the whole attitude towards culture in the 50's was pretty bad on the part of our political elite (is it any better?).
Those were pretty bad times, so probably.
