That bisexual trope needs to die. Pretty thankful for a character like Leliana, she's bi, enjoys sex but damn once she falls for your warden is she loyal and devoted.

NEVAH!

I agree entirely, it's a shity stereotype. If every male in video games, tv, media was portrayed as some kind of deviant pervert it would drive me insane. Although, now that I think of it in some ways that's exactly how were portrayed.

I love Sera, but it really sucks having the first lesbian character being so hated (and it stings a bit that the first gay one is so loved).  Partially I think that's due to the nature of fandom, dudes are always gonna get more of a pass, but she's obviously written to be polarizing. It's disheartening.  Like, devoid of any context, Sera is fantastic a++. But within it, there's some questionable stuff there.

it was a joke. geez

Besides the whole thing is bound to turn into a high school level popularity contest. No way I'd want to take part in that kind of crap anyway.

Oh, sorry. I thought you just found out about it.

I don't know, it's really hard for me to answer as my opinions ate so wrapped up in how low of an opinion I had of myself for such a long time that now I crave any positives I can get and feel sad with every negative. Damn was that a bit of a downer. Sorry for the dramatics.

I may not personally have a problem with Sera as a character, but I don't have these issues in my past either. Anyone who ever tells you are inferior because of your gender identity and sexuality can just f*ck off as far as I'm concerned. All I've ever seen of you on here makes me think that you are an awesome and lovely person, so please do take that positive from me. :)

What Uncle said. Going back a couple thousand posts, I once said that seeing that you have liked one of my posts brought me a sense of joy. That is still true today. That is because you are a truly great person and I am honestly glad I have had the opportunity to talk to you, even if it has been over a screen.

I'm in the "I like her and don't care what other people think" category. I enjoy Dorion as a character, too, but people completely gloss over the fact that he supports slavery, which could easily make him the most despicable of all the companions, if people took it as personally as they take Sera's personality traits.

I just wish people would stop placing social responsibility on Sera's shoulders. She's a memorable, hilarious, exceptionally well-written and performed character, and easily one of the best that BioWare's ever made. Not everyone has to appreciate her, or like her, but the endless need to have her represent others' political views or be condemned for being inadequate is equally as frustrating to me as the criticisms of her fanbase from those who find her personality off-putting.

It's all good. I use humor( horrible, dry, not funny humor ) to deflect. Took me years to get over how people treated me, and I'm still a total shut in. You don't have a reason to apologize, the ignorant pieces of **** That made you feel that way are the ones that should apologize.

It's not odd. But they could have done the whole "divisive lesbian character than you can boot out of the party at any time if you don't like her" at a later time and not for the very first lesbian companion in the franchise. So far we have dozens of examples of straight characters being "knights in shining armour/goody two shoes/selfless/etc". It kinda sends the message that gay people can't possibly be knights in shining armour too; maybe it's not what the authors intended, but this is how it comes off to me and at the very least a few people I know IRL.

Yup. One of my best friends had a person virtually melt her face off because she dared say that she doesn't like Cullen for this and that reason. She was polite, and got attacked because she disliked a character. People can be very weird, to say the least.

On the first point I see how Sera is divisive. She is one of two gay characters in the game. I can see how lesbian players might feel a bit irritated with her portrayal. It might have gone down differently if she had followed a gay Cassandra type. Still I would think this is not what the writers intended. I just doubt they meant to cause any hurt or offense. Sometimes people just don't see all the consequences through in their planning stage. I still think Sera is a good character and she isn't a bad person and I firmly believe we have not seen the last of her. I think we'll get a chance to see her evolve.

On the second point: Yeah. I've seen that and it makes no sense to me. It's a game. These characters do not really exist but people get way too passionate about them to the point they lose perspective. But fandom is like that. I remember in the 80's in Junior High two guys I hung out with getting really snarly with each other about who was cooler: Kirk or Spock? Nonsensical, right? It's a silly thing to start tossing expletives at someone over but people will do it. Yeah guess we didn't need the internet to get that sort of thing going!

This. All of this. ^^^

You are a wonderful person, kind, compassionate, all around lovely. If anyone ever dares telling you the contrary, point me in their direction: I'll punch them so hard they're going to find themselves in another galaxy in 0.2 seconds.

Yup, I do find her exasperating, I like her, she has her sweet moments but damn does she really wear me down at times. She's trying, wasn't an easy LI option on my end.

It's more that lgbt people are usually portrayed in media as people with loose morals, deviants, joke characters and the like. So, having a lgbt character be a paragon of justice and goodness would actually be a subversion more than anything.

Words are failing me and I might have another got at this after sleep and time to think, but I meant heroes as in characters to look up to, to inspire people, and subversions as the kind of broken heroes we discuss failings and heavy things.

If it was endless, sure. I can't stand the tumblr discourse about her, for example. But talking in a enormous thread, where I have devoted pages upon pages talking about how she's an interesting and complex character, about how I feel her character reads in a larger social context is hardly putting social responsibility on her shoulders. There are lots of different angles to talk about a character from.

So, in a attempt to lighten the mood I just finished the first season of Silver Spoon. It's a anime series about a young man who, in a attempt to escape his father and school transfers to a agricultural high school. The school consists of dozens of farms, Cows, Chickens etc. It's what's known as Slice of life( it's drama, comedy, romance ) no aliens, demons or anything like that.

I laughed my ass of watching him raise his little baby piglet Pork Bowl( no joke that's it's name ) sadly, it was a ****ing trap. He was later forced to kill it. I cried... like a baby, a hungry, angry baby.

I can relate to that. I had a low self opinion for many years. At several points it turned into self hatred for a couple of years. I'm doing a lot better. But, do find myself taking steps backwards from time to time. But, like anyone else I can only take it day to day.

Funny enough, a song snapped everything into perspective for me. I knew of the Rollins Band and love Black Flag when Henry Rollins was with them. But, I caught this song on the radio and it felt like it is directed right at me. So I became a huge fan Henry Rollins, his band and all of Henry Rollins work in general. The song is aggressive, but, it's mean't to be a wake up call for those who need it. Because there are times where we need someone to ask us wtf are you doing to yourself.

Reminds me of a poetry reading in highschool.. I didn't do my homework, and just read Rollins' lyrics for class.

They were impressed. I don't remember the exact song, but around the time of that album.

This just came up on my giant random Spotify playlist. When it was in the charts I was just a kid, I just loved the music and the meaning of the lyrics flew over my head (I never saw this video) but now having grown up and known more gay and lesbian people (including some of the "coming out" stories that were shared here a few months back) it really resonates...

I may still have the lp for this that I bought in Germany in the 80's. I might also have the maxi single. Great band. Jimmy Somerville has some great pipes!

Well, I've gone from mad to sad. Not sure which emotion sucks more. :(

I've been feeling absolutely gutted since I found out, but this quote from I Shall Wear Midnight helped me feel a little better:

"One day all of us shall die but - and this is the most important thing - we are not dead yet."
